I remember it can be quite tough to gain recognition on DeviantArt when you first start out. It's a massive website with so many features and ways to interact! When I started out, I was lucky to have a friend of mine giving me a little shoutout in their journal, which gained me my first couple of watchers. I'll do the same in this journal for some new Deviants I found that have really cool galleries, and I thought of giving a couple of tips as well on gaining recognition:

~  TIPS  ~

  • Loads of interaction! DeviantArt is considered a social media website as well as an art site, and offers many more tools for interaction, feedback, and commenting than Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr ever will! Use it wisely :D If you want to receive comments, and have people view your art, you have to put some effort in yourself as well. Comment on other people's artwork, +fav it, +watch those you really like, keep communicating. Try interacting with other new artists and grow together!

  • Make good use of the "artist's comment". With that I mean the text you can add underneath your artworks. You can add icons, links, thumbnails to other deviations, you can add anything that makes it easier for people viewing your artwork to find other, relevant artworks!
For example, in my artwork description I add links to my other social media accounts, as well as include thumbnails of other artworks of mine: [SU] Show of the Stars - Lars and Sadie
And another example, if you're writing a story, it's handy to provide links to your gallery folders where people can easily find more art and chapters of that story: killing graphite pencils - Orion
Or add "next page" links when you're uploading comic pages! MtRC - Chapter01 PG01

You can insert a link by typing < a href="Here goes your URL address">Here goes the text you want to appear</ a> (remove the spaces before the two A's) in your artist comment.
For example, when I type < a href="www.deviantart.com/vixenkiba">My Profile Page</ a> (but remove the spaces before the A's) I'll get: My Profile Page

  • Use your profile page well! When you go to "edit page" in the upper right corner of your profile page, you can add and remove whichever widgets you like. Since you probably want to show off your art, make sure that your art is the first thing people see when they go to your page! You can even install widgets that show only a specific group within your gallery. For example, I have one of my widgets set on my "resources" gallery folder, as it contains resources that might be handy for you guys to use :D

Here's some examples of profile pages that I find looking really good:
    megatruh
    NukeRooster
    hen-tie
These profile pages look organised, and in one glance show you the art style of the artist, as well as links to their other social media accounts, F.A.Q.s, commission pages, etc.

  • Make use of Groups! In the top, underneath "more", you can click on Groups. Here, you'll find literally thousands of groups that all specify in different things. Join a couple of big (and smaller specialised) groups, and submit your art to all of them; it will definitely give you far more exposure!

  • Join specific feedback groups. There's a couple of amazing groups out there in particular that are good for getting a wider audience and receiving more feedback.
:iconprojectcomment: ProjectComment provides a comment-for-comment system, that guarantees feedback on your art as long as you give it to others.
:icongetwatchers: GetWatchers used to have its own app that allowed you to find other deviants, and them finding you, but that app is currently down. Instead, they currently provide a discord!

  • Make good use of #hashtags. You can add hashtags to your artwork; add those that are relevant to your art. You can add tags for characters, scenery elements, emotions, etc. Basically, put yourself in the mind of someone searching for art; what would you type in the searchbar to find an artwork like yours?

I hope these tips will help a little bit for some beginners! They all helped me. There's no real trick to getting recognition on DeviantArt though, it's simply just a lot of work on your part. Try it out, and see what works best for you!

You're much welcome! No worries though, many people just use it to promote their work, and many people try out different websites, so it's okay not to be active xD The webcomic sounds exciting, will you post on DeviantArt once it's up?

This is seriously helpful! So helpful!! I know close to nothing on how Deviantart works but always loved this site. Now that I'm actually trying to post my artwork it's good to know where to find more watchers and comments. You're one of the first people I followed so I'll definitely try to keep updated with this site now.

Hewwo, im a new deviant, and i got 1 watcher, no core tho bc i am poor o.o, but i really would like to have a good active page, i draw alot and see many ppl giving me llama badges (idk if thats good or not O.o) but this helps me, and hopefully you can help every one out to, Right?

Hello! Honestly, you don't need core at all to gain new watchers! Core is handy if you want to use coding on your profile page to make it look awesome, but not necessary at all!

Llama badges usually are a sign of appreciation, and a llama badge does mean that someone went to check out your page :D So I personally see them as something good xD

And haha, thanks :'D

Just gonna point out while GetWatchers app was up I had serious issues with it. I'd leave feedback with a decent sized comment, fave, watch, all that good stuff, and then their app wouldn't count it ;/.

This was a nice helpful journal, I've really noticed that when I run around on others people's pages the activity on my page has a sudden spike.

Aahw, geez, that's sad to hear. I personally (and my friends) have good experiences with the app, it sucks to hear it didn't work for you. Maybe some browser extension got in the way somehow?

And I know right? Being active on other people's pages has always helped me as well to get more flow towards my own page. That's why it's always the first thing I advise to people :D

I'm not sure I've tried using it a few times over the years now and every time I quit using it because I have that issue. Maybe I'm too fast for it or something? I don't know. I don't mind leaving the comments but when it doesn't count them... Angered Inside Out Reaction Icon: Anger on fire It got frustrating after awhile. I also noticed that when I submitted art there (and other services that run off the comment for comment system to be honest) it tended to attract... juvenile comments. Yes thank you for telling me that my drawing of a dragon looks like a gremlin. Now what? So I gave up and resigned myself to being unpopular and alone forever.

Well, at the moment the app has been closed since April, so it can't really be tested anymore...

And yeah, that can happen. But don't forget, the more an artwork is seen, the more popular it gets, the more negative comments you'll get as well from trolls! Just look at a random artwork that has tons of +favs or views, you're more likely to find negative comments there... Or in other words, the more your artwork is in the spotlights, the more "attention" it gets :D But don't let it get to you. I'm learning how to deal with such comments as well.

Wow, it's been closed for that long? Hopefully they get it back up eventually, it was a really good concept :D.

I've got a couple of drawings that got a lot of attention (er for me anyways, it's on a scale) "naturally" because they were fanart and they didn't attract the same kind of... "Helpful" comments so I think it was related to people feeling like they had to comment or something. I quit putting my art in those kind of groups and except for a couple of obvious trolls they basically stopped. I get a few negative comments every so often but I guess I haven't made anything controversial lately. I should probably step up my game or something.

Speaking of broadening one's audience. Do you have good experience doing collabs with other artists? I've never done a collab myself so I don't know if the level of fun outweighs the err potential frustration. Is it worth the effort of trying to find a collab partner?

Hope so too! They changed it with a discord server now, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Mmmh, from the negative comments I get, I never know where they come from; if they're redirected from groups, or if they find my art by random. I usually get them on fanart, and especially when I don't draw characters the way they think they're supposed to be :D

I have never done a collab myself, but I have been talking about doing one for AGES (5 years now?) with my good friend. Personally, I wouldn't do collabs to get more audience, but instead just to have a bit of fun xD And this is my personal opinion, but I wouldn't do a collab with a stranger myself. What I like so much about the idea of collabs, is that I can draw my characters together with my friend's characters, and combine our very different art styles somehow xD

This has to be the best tip: hack DA, and throw all your art on the front page! You'll be, though for a short moment and for the wrong reasons, quite famous :)

on a more serious note; that front page does do miracles...

I think I got close with my pencil portraits and especially this little guy Gift - dragon (but secretly a brush test). It got lots of favs in the first 24 hours without throwing it into groups, then things suddenly got a lot quieter. Though i'm not sure what the default for the first page is. Something like the first 20 deviations? because mine is set to 120, and that was enough for my stuff to get there.

what I do know is that the most popular art is technically not the most popular; DA throws in art from less popular categories with fewer favs to prevent the front page from clogging up with my little pony fanart and such. not exactly fair, but I don't mind :) and comment matter more than favs, I think.

Totally agreed. I do agree actually with DA throwing in art from the less popular categories, however this gives rise to issues like people uploading shit art in, e.g., contest categories, just to get noticed.

And yeah, I think comments are "worth more" than favs too. I would love to see the mathematics behind which artworks arrive on the frontpage!

I haven't seen that happen a lot, though I do see some art popping up once in a while that shouldn't be on the first page, I think. maybe DA's fair exposure algorithm glitches or something...

and I might be on the first page right now, there is some crazy shit going on with my latest artwork XD
