The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle.
It's a trilogy, but I have only read the first book. It's a fantasy about a young woman, who is forced to marry a goblin king.

Coraline, Neil Gaiman
Gamer Girl, Mari Mancusi

Just a couple of ones I can remember reading
Coraline, a classic good read that's dark but it does simulate the imagination.

Not sure if Maddy, mc of Gamer Girl, could be considered a strong character. More like angsty teen with a love of manga. I suppose she is strong when she begins to handles high school, bullies, and her family situation maturely.
