Paint thy Rainbow by Vivyi Paint thy Rainbow by Vivyi
Something a little different for the cover of my blog site. Would love some critiques + redlining is okay.

I don't really have anything in particular that I need pointed out  this time, except maybe some ideas for ways to implement my vector shading. XD

I love the way you did the shapes of the drawing itself, it is very original and you have very good technique, because not everyone is able to put lights and shadows in that style the way you did, it looks very natural.
the position of the characters and lines, together with the amount of background colors makes the image itself is too loaded, you should look for what is the center of what you intend to show in the image itself. But anyway, it implies that something is happening inside the drawing between both characters, which makes it have many ways to interpret, and leave the subjectivity is very relatable of an artist (kudos you!)

I really like the colours youve used here and the minimalist/vector style with the shading! It works very well, I can clearly see that it is two people, one with a book and another with a brush. The accents on the cheeks are really subtle but nice as well. The palette of pinks-purples is really nice too, and the subtle orange/yellows for the objects being held aren’t distracting from the characters. Your grasp on colours is really good.

I would go back and clean up the edges, for example on the shading of the hair. it might help bring out the shapes you’re going for more. For example, the collar of the right ladies’ dress overlaps onto the white line which doesn’t seem to make sense. I would also take care to use references, I can tell the left lady is holding a book but the direction the pages seem to be curling, the top of the spine would be showing, sort of like this - thumb1.shutterstock.com/displa…

Also definitely look at some references for hands - they’re horrible to draw, I know the struggle, but I find taking pictures of my or someone’s hand doing what I need (eg. holding the paintbrush) can really help! If not, the internet is full of resources.

Without any context, it is quite hard to garner what is happening in the piece. Upon first viewing, I wasn’t sure if the lady was being painted, or if it was depicting 2 characters but with a line between them. Despite this though, there is a clear sense of something sweet between the two characters, given by the colours and subtle things like the hearts and blushes. The background colours (rainbow and dark purple) are also subtle despite their contrast and work well together. I find my eye tossing between the two characters, I don’t feel either of them dominate the image necessarily. Overall this is a successful image, there's clearly a story for the characters, and the colours and details ooze with charm.
Sorry this is so long - I hope this helps!!

Thank yooou  I had to go all rainbow just for Estelle ;P She needs a little more rainbow in her life *SHOT*

Awww thanks! It was a challenge to work with the background because of the pastely effect, so I had to change the hues A LOT XD  But I'm happy with the results! :D

NOTE: the art-style which am not familiar with i can't go deep in to analyse it.

1. I heard it somewhere the term relive zone (not sure) of any art piece, so my eyes are resting more towards the pink girl.

2. ______

conclusion: am blank right now, apart from this painting looks soft & it shows the maturity of the characters. (& why you tagged steampunk fantasy).

Ah thank you! It's okay that you weren't able to point much out, I'm grateful for  any sort of feedback, really :D

I tagged this a Steampunk Fantasy because these characters are based on a novel / webcomic series that is set in a steampunk / fantasy type universe :D But I do note they are both used loosely. That's all really :XD:

I like how you used a rainbow scheme for the left side of this picture. It's alluring and provides a nice contrast to the dark part in the right image. The white dividing down the middle is an artistic touch. From a blank slate to an abundance of color, this is a pic and relates to LGBT+ themes as well. Your ocs are precious and you must be proud to be their "mother".

Paintbrush is noticeable although those usually have a metal tip present to connect the hairs to the wood. The book/journal is curved crescent like. It's not realistic but it still appears as a book. I assume Estelle is wearing gloves, which is a good Victorian touch. Marcilyn with hearts above her head, that's a blessed romantic touch. I love LOVE the expressions both of these girls have.

This is amazing and full of thought, emotion, gay, love, and joy. A wonderful pic before the next year begins XD

Thank you so much for your lovely critique! I'm very glad you pointed out about the book and the paintbrush... that's honestly really helpful :) I think when I work more on this picture, I will reference off of a book as well as a paintbrush because sometimes you really can't rely on your memory for these things XD I struggle a bit with objects sometimes lol x'D

Oh, that's actually Estelle's hands! Her face is the same color. She's just really pale LOL Haha, well - I really don't see it like a motherly thing tbh x'D I see them more like bookish characters that have personalities of real people - and with stories to be told. If I'm a mother, I'm an evil dictator... lol but that's mainly because I'm also a writer :P My characters are almost like alternate friends and enemies alike XD

But anyway! Thank you SO MUCH  I'm always glad when you leave me critiques, your honesty is so appreciated. I love it when people are honest to me and tell me what they really feel

You're welcome. I do my best. Objects and people together are challenging. It takes another physical element into perspective and scale along with the human body. Clap

Ok, so those are not gloves. Noted. That's a rich thought and relationship btwn you and your ocs. LOL Every artist has that cruel twist in that when it comes to being evil to his or her ocs. Alternate enemies... I've never really considered that angle much. It's an interesting dynamic although I can see it depends on what an oc's intended purpose is.

You're welcome Viv. I appreciate your art, friendship, and insights. It means a lot to be able to look at and comment on your art, especially when I can go deep. I think the best feedback/critiques that I give artists are the ones that make me feel extraordinary. In that sense, I put down more thought when there's more than meets my eyes. ;) (Wink) Huggle! Heart Heart Heart

I think a lot of writers have to separate their empathy for their characters from the story itself because a good story needs conflict and for character growth. I always try to create empathy for the reader through understanding my character's motivations well. (That was full of writer jargon I'm terribly sorry  xD)

I appreciate your friendship as well! And you always have an interesting perspective on things that I really appreciate :) For some, that's the best kind of critique indeed! :D I think a well written critique is one that is full of thought and makes someone think.
