PERSONALITY
Personality Type: tba
Drive: Aesthetic
Pretentious -> lazy -> cunning. Judgmental and condescending. Extroverted, social -> charming -> lies easily. Aesthetically concerned. Elegant, slow -> deliberate. Uptight and prude. Dominant and controlling.
Toulouse was bred and raised to look good on a market, not to be practical for everyday use. It's no wonder with the way he was treated like he was something fragile, something worth looking after, that he turned pretentious and lazy; he has a knack for avoiding work, cunning enough to use the excuse that he'd simply never been taught how to, even though he could easily learn. While it wasn't as noticeable when he was younger, the years he's spent as an art model for his owner have engraved this attitude into his personality, and you couldn't get him to move a muscle even if you begged.
There's nothing more important to Toulouse than how he looks to others, constantly so worried and concerned of how others perceive him that his entire being seems more like an elaborate act formed to the audience's pleasure. Maybe that's why social situations come to him so easily, like he's made for the public eye and knows how to form his image just how he likes it, too. Elegant and slow movements make him seem careful and gentle, even kind to the untrained eye, and his social charm never fails to impress; the years Toulouse has spent pretending sometimes make him think that this carefully created personality is the truth. His entire set up is deliberate and, at the end of it all, fake. It's why he's so dominant in social settings; grasping the thinnest strands of control he can, maybe not ruin his public image, maybe to stop feeling so lost in everything he does.
He knows exactly that he's a slave, property, something to be owned, but with the way he's always been handed around nobility and rich folk, the ugly truth of the extreme classism in Aodh hasn't sunken in enough to be taken seriously yet. He's a bit judgmental like that, too, thinking he's above other slaves for having a rich owner, and takes a particular liking to the mindset that mistreated and abused slaves could just stop if they behaved; toxic and wrong, but an opinion that doesn't require much work or education to have, something Toulouse seems to like.
There's not only a gaping hole in his past where education should have been, but also the need for a parental figure. All the people who have ever handled him have known to keep his distance; from his breeder to his slave trainer and first owners. He hates admitting it, but he's lonely and loves cutting himself off and wallow in his sadness; he likes saying it's just for the attention, but his heart knows there's something missing.
HISTORY
Childhood
Toulouse was bred and raised in New Valore as part of a new breeding program meant to modernize the Aodhian beauty standard and catch the eyes of extravagant and, most importantly, rich folk. Like most slaves born in Valore, he was weaned from his mother at the soonest possible moment and sold from his breeder to the slave trader Chervil, who agreed to train Toulouse and a few other slaves his age.
His entire childhood is defined in a gaping hole where his parents should have been; even the slave trader learned to keep his distance to detach him from seeking a parental figure in his early years. Instead of being trained to work in a specific market area or in the household, his and the other slaves' program was focused on looking pretty and acting elegant in the hopes of marketing them toward nobles or artisans that sought eye candy to keep at home or show off at events. The Aodhian public criticized this, calling for a better use of perfectly good serviles, but the sale of two of the eldest to a noble living in Opulence was enough to defend the action and keep pushing Toulouse and the others toward their first sale.
Toulouse was sold for the first time when he was 16. His new home was to be a vineyard in Opulence, owned by the noble Kaisar - the male was rarely around, mostly letting others run his businesses, so Toulouse could get away with a few things. While he was maybe first bought to advertise the red wine the vineyard produced, the employees expected Toulouse to be able to work and help out with producing the wine; he got away with doing absolutely nothing but sit around in a pretty villa for about a year, before Kaisar took him to a slave trader and wordlessly let him go.
At first, Toulouse's behavior was excused by most with the fact that he'd simply never learned a single household chore in his training, but when he was sold on to the owner of a spa in Haven, his almost lazy behavior and probably faked helplessness turned into something very regular. They tried teaching him how to welcome clients, guide them to their rooms and maybe clean up every now and then, but Toulouse quickly leaned how to get out of chores and tasks easily. He stayed about a year before his owner sold him on.
An architect named Fiji who resided in a large villa in New Valore decided to give this new breeding line that had become quite a talk around town a try. While traders probably struggled a lot with making Toulouse seem like a good choice, his extremely elegant and effortless appearance made him very sellable. The architect took Toulouse to his first events and parties, something he found to enjoy very much, but his pretentious attitude quickly became too much again and instead of selling him on, Fiji took him back to his old trainer.
Adulthood
Chervil quickly realized the flaws he had trained into Toulouse and was well on his way to fix them, when an ordeal in Bloom he decided to take Toulouse to became so much more than that. Toulouse had easily caught the eye of Pascal, a painter and ex-professor of Bloom's university, who saw a halo sitting between his ears and scales growing from his back - he was immensely interested in purchasing Toulouse and took him home that same day.
He met Parvati, his other slave that he had bought for what he called her misunderstood beauty, and quickly realized what his job would be - model for the art Pascal and the artists around him drew. It roughly translated to sit still and look pretty, which Toulouse had become an expert in doing, and he quickly found his new home within Pascal's house. The way he recklessly spent money on both him and Parvati and gushed about both of them being walking pieces of art did nothing but fuel his already too large ego; but after two years, Pascal's selflessness with money went downhill very quickly. He had to regretfully sell a lot of pieces in his collection, drastically cut down on funds and even pondered selling his beloved slaves. Thankfully, Toulouse started hearing better words from art galleries and shows every now and then, and at 23, Pascal took him to his very first art gallery.
Being the center of attention in a room and having the sole function of being eye candy for visitors was what Toulouse was born and raised to do - he reveled in the attention he got from other artists and with a little bit of begging, Pascal started to take him out a lot more, showing him and the paintings of him off.
In Game
While always pretty distant to happenings in New Valore, mostly because of his own disinterest, the news that King Isador had called for all slaves to be utilized as Labor Slaves hit Toulouse hard. He was so used to things being handed to him on a golden platter, he worried endlessly about his future and his comfortableness; while Parvati had always seemed a bit petty and more like a competitor when with Pascal, Toulouse clang to her the entire way to Valore, scared of being left alone and having to fend for himself. The few days he had to work (or pretended to, at least) were absolute hell, so when Pascal found him and bought him back for a hefty sum to the state, he nearly cried out of relief. Too used to his very slow-going and relaxed life, these events first made him realize how rough life was for other slaves that weren't bred for comfort and nobles - Parvati had to be left behind, as Pascal just barely scraped the bottom of his funds to pull Toulouse out.
Toulouse quickly realized that Pascal was sinking lower and lower into the pits of the art industry. His art was deemed too otherworldly, too ugly to be shown in galleries, and being left with less than luxurious ways, Toulouse has yet to adjust to the tiny bit of work he does nowadays. He often finds himself wishing to be sold again, on to richer nobility, to ensure his comfortableness and laziness, but knows he isn't in the place to make any demands.
