Actually the wallpaper was not created by Microsoft ;-)

It was shot by Franz Pritz, an Austrian photographer. Microsoft purchased the picture from him for just some bucks, only to present it later as the wallpaper for all the earlier versions of Windows 10.

Here is a local news article about him and the wallpaper (only in German :( )…

All in all he is very proud having his photograph viewed by so many people around the globe :)

The basic questions that nobody asked:
---Where has this picture be taken?
---What does it show (that is the name of the mountains and region shown)?

Thanks for sharing it.
Microsoft always choose the perfect wallpaper, how can they do that?
Thaks the uploader for this amazing wall

FYI. This is not 4K! ;-P

4K = 4096 x 2180
this = 2560 x 1600

You're not wrong, but... the actual resolution depends a bit on the aspect ratio. 16:9 4k would be 3840 × 2160.

This wallpaper is like WQXGA

The weird thing is that 3840 × 2160 is not actually true 4K, even though every single "4K" monitor use that resolution.
3840 × 2160 is UHD (Ultra High Definition), but people (including me) say 4K instead because UHD sounds too similar to HD. So people get a bit confused.
I think 4096 x 2180 is the standard for cinemas.
So basically:
4096 x 2180 = Cinema 4K
3840 x 2180 = Consumer "4K"
