Whale of a feast

*These are entirely fictional creatures of my own design*

I just realized that this is the first Draconology piece I've done that shows more real world creatures than fictional ones, which is pretty much the main objective behind this ecology series - to show how fictional animals might coexist with real ones.

Somewhere in the North Pacific, the carcass of a right whale provides a bountiful feast that attracts scavengers from far and wide.
Among them is a large great white shark and a Northern axex (Axex borealis).

A close relative of the Southern axex (Axex australis), the northern axex is slightly larger, but fills an almost identical niche of a maritime scavenger. While its beak is certainly stronger than that of the seabirds it hunts alongside, the whale's skin is far too thick, and thus eagerly waits for the shark to eat its fill and leave so that it can - literally - dig into the large opening it has left behind.

I really like the atmosphere of this picture and the axex looks very natural.
