And THIS is why you do NOT approach a junkwall that is housing raiders, especially not the chokepoint where you're forced to the part with the "broken" semi-truck where they'll blind you with high beams before shooting your head off, "wave goodbye to your head wanka!"

Its original Fallout 3 (Van Buren) by Black Isle artwork, I have put it here because its pretty hard to find on the net, especially now when Ovlivion with Guns is released by Bethesda.

Propably it was entrance to one of the cities in the game (only alpha demo of Van Buren is avialable to public) like Junktown in Fallout: [link]

It was most certainly not Oblivion with guns. As strongly evidence by my love for Fallout 3 and the Fallout series as a whole but general lack of ability to give a shit about TES4 or any other TES game. You either didn't play Fallout 3 (at the time of your post) or don't want to accept that Bethesda did a good job with Fallout 3. Was it different? Yes. Was it bad? No.

Though it was a shame how far Van Buren was in development when it got axed. So much done for it to just all go to waste. Though I believe all the stuff from Van Buren that doesn't contradict Beth Soft's canon is in fact canon.

I played Fallout 3 (not much but about several hours) at my buddy's computer. It was without New Vegas of course, so I do not speak about the expansion that I heard did better then the 'basic' game.

... and Yes I was and still am pretty disappointed about it, there are a lot things done poorly in the Bethesda's Fallout, I even did not liked the Fallout Tactics, the game worked quite well if You played in 'real-time' but the tour based combat was broken - to be precise the moment when the battle started being for some time real-time, then switching to tour-based after some random period of time.

Is Fallout 3 total crap? No. Different? Of course. Comparing it to today's games its quite nice game, comparing it to the original Fallout 1 & 2 its just poor sequel.

I am glad that Brian Fargo started his Wasteland 2 on Kickstarter, I funded it the first day and look forward for a great classic isometric tour-based RPG.

Regards,
vermaden

Fair enough. I'm still inclined to say that a fair dose of nostalgia skews your opinion. I still think calling it TES with guns is pretty crass and uncalled for. FO3 was unique enough to stand as a separate entity from TES.

Now, I'm not sure Beth Soft should have been as bold as to call it Fallout 3 though. It was quite the departure from the originals, not only in gameplay, but in setting and story. Granted it's their game now, it might have faired better with older fans if they hadn't dubbed it a numbered Fallout game. However, I don't think it was a lackluster sequel in any regard.

What things did you feel that Bethesda did poorly with Fallout 3, if you don't mind me asking.

Also, New Vegas was a stand-alone title, not an expansion of Fallout 3.

> I'm still inclined to say that a fair dose of nostalgia skews your opinion.

Of course it is, if Fallout 3 will came without knowing the old Fallouts 1 & 2 I will probably like it more, but knowing how good a Fallout can be I am more 'picky' here.

> What things did you feel that Bethesda did poorly with Fallout 3, if you don't mind me asking.

Character 'scaling', for example creating a character in Fallout 1 & 2 You have had some tough choices to make, good at that, bad at that etc. While Fallout 3 still uses SPECIAL, choices between low or high stats are not that crucial, it will 'work' anyway, like it does not matter.

The battle ... is a caricature for me, You have action points to use, but they reload in real-time and while doing that You can still fight in that real-time waiting for the tour-based attack because its 'better'?

These are major flaws I saw after playing Fallout 3 for several hours, I can not say about the depth of plot or the diversity of quests etc, it would be a lit from me with such a short period of playing that game.

Thanks for clarification on F3NV, I really thought that just an expansion ;)

Yeah, with the add-on Broken Steel it's incredibly easy to max out all of your stats, including SPECIAL ones. Even in the Vanilla game it's not that hard to max your regular skills if you really want. I can agree on that.

The combat system served its purpose. They made it a little harder to exploit in NV though, thankfully.

And as far as story goes, I'd imagine you'd like NV better than FO3. It stays closer to the Core Region (like it's on the fringes, in Vegas, obviously), and features the NCR and brings back Van Buren's Caesar's Legion.

The gameplay of NV is more or less the same as FO3's though. But it's much harder to max out your skills in vanilla NV. If you have the add-ons its easy to max everything, but the third add-on also adds a trait that stops you from leveling at 30 (which is the vanilla level cap, the cap with all add-ons is 50).

All in all, I think you'd like New Vegas more, but I dunno how much more... Give it a rent, perhaps. Unless you have absolute zero interest in it, of course.

Its not for me whatever is it hard or easy, but it
should be consistent, integral, not some random not
very well thought idea poorly implemented at the same
time, its not sub $1 game, its multi-million budget
game, such mistakes are unforgeable for me.

If they wish to provide two models for battle
gameplay, they should put an option in the menu,
those who want real-time FPS would be playing it like
a Quake, those who want turn-based gameplay would
choose that one and everybody would be happy.

Its not about the place, playing the same locations
over and over again can be quite boring, its not
about location ;)

Currently I do not even own a hardware capable of
playing Fallout 3 or NV, not talking about permanent
lack of time ;)

Maybe I will try to convince me to F3 and NV some
time, but I definitely look forward for Wasteland 2 ;)

Nice artwork though.

Oblivion with guns ha..Comparing to Fallout 3, Oblivion may run much more stabile..It has more post effects and better visuals yet it stresses the system lesser than fallout 3..and game continues after you beat the main storyline, wich is deady important for the sake of the game and gaming.

Ok. Did you make it or just post it?
I would prefer it if it were they that made number 3 but i have faith in Bethesda.

I just rescaled original Balck Isle Studios artwork to 1024x768 and posted it here so it can be more easily avialable.

Black Isle Studios created Van Buren in 2003, you can even download an alpha demo from the net, or check a movie of that demo: [link]

You can also check this site to see how Bethesda's Fallout 3 will look like: [link]

... and here is how PipBoy is going to look like: [link]

I think that Bethesda will make a Oblivion like shit of Fallout 3, something like Heroes of Might and Magic V, you will play it one time and go back to old legend.

Thanks for the links.
I think that Bethesda is very aware of how much people are going to "hate" them if they don't make a worthy successor to the old games to not do it.
And they are competent people, and have probably played Fallout 1 and 2, so i hope at least.

Oblivion also was going to be such a great game, it is only averge at most, like most of today's games, nice graphics ... and almost nothing more.

Fallout 3D?

Nothing good in that, but time will show.

Lets hope they learned something from oblivion then. (It should have been more like Morrowind!)
As you said, time will show...
