Friends, I'm considering leaving DeviantArt.

Since my projects take months to complete, I don't upload but a few times a year. DeviantArt has had a massive problem with Malware getting in through their ads. Every time I come here to check out things, my anti-virus blocks a high-threat risk coming into my computer. The only thing DeviantArt has done is allow you to download a firefox ad on where you can report the ads, but that still doesn't block the attempted attacks. This has been a problem for years. Every time a Core membership sale comes up where I get 6 months, I'll get it, but it comes up rarely and I can't justify the normal membership as, A. It used to be cheaper for Premium, but they doubled the cost and renamed the same thing "Core". I don't use the other features, I *JUST* want ad-free browsing to protect myself, and B. As I said, I don't upload often enough to justify paying $5 a month to use this site.

If DeviantArt really cared about stopping these hackers, they would offer a tiered system where there would be a cheaper price for only ad-free browsing. Maybe I'll come back every once in awhile to throw up a new picture, but for my own safety, I just can't come here anymore until DeviantArt fixes their shit.

Long Time No See

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 9, 2016, 9:36 AM
I haven't posted in a long time because I'm bad at taking the time to actually update stuff. I have been pretty busy with my art since I last posted! For one, I finished this thing:

Jadis, Queen of Narnia by Verdaera Jadis, Queen of Narnia by Verdaera

This was obviously a loooooong time coming; 4 years in fact. You can read more about this costume on the deviations. As this is my pride and joy right now, and I not only spent a long time on it, but stepped out of my cloth comfort zone to do props and wig work, I entered it in several contests and will do so one last time at Costume Con next month. I've won a few awards!

Dragon Con 2015 Costume Contest: Best Hair and Make up; Audience Favorite; Social Media Audience Favorite

Archon 2015: Best in Master Class; Audience Favorite

C2E2 Crown Championship of [Costuming]; In the Chicago Division, I won 1st in the TV & Movie Category, and 3rd Place overall in the Chicago division! I was really please that three of the judges were industry professionals, two were costume designers on shows that I watch, and the third is a WETA concept artist! Weta created the White Witch's original costume :)

Also at C2E2, I am proud of myself for picking up a UFO (UnFinished Object) and finishing it. I finally finished my Merida costume. I love it and it is soooo comfortable!

'Historically Accurate' Merida -C2E2 by Verdaera

I'll post more about what I've been up to since I last posted a journal later, but first, a question.  I have been going by the name "Verdaera" since college. I couldn't think of a good internet handle to use, so I've just been using this random Star Wars RP character I created back in the day because it was a unique name, but I am considering changing it. Should I keep my Verdaera handle? Or is it weird and I should move on? I'll tell the name I'm switching to in a PM, I just don't want to post it in case someone decides to take it first ;)

2013 Costume List

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 23, 2013, 10:23 PM
Hello, Watchers!

I can't believe I haven't updated my journal since last year. After D*C and trying to cram a costume in before Halloween, I got a little burnt out. As it is, at the beginning of the year, updates are a little slow as all my new costumes are in the build phase.

But, I always post a list at the beinning of each year discussing what I would like to make in the coming year, then look back at what I actually ended up accomplishing. Here's what I said I'd do last year:

2012 Costume Resolutions by Verdaera

And here's what I accomplished costume-wise

WIP - White Witch Mail 2 by Verdaera Elanor Gamgee - full shot by Verdaera Before The Reaping by Verdaera Hunting for Squirrels by Verdaera Katniss Everdeen, The Girl On Fire by Verdaera

And one new Jedi costume I don't have nice enough pictures to put on dA. So 1.5 of what was on my list, but I finished the same number of costumes that I had on there! That makes me kind of proud, I usually only finish 1 or 2 the whole year.

Here's my list for 2013:

2013 Costume List by Verdaera

The White Witch Jadis from Narnia (Top, 1st) I started for last year, but determined it was too big a project to finish in time. As I only got around halfway done with the chainmail skirt and I have a ton of props to do with this, unless it was my only project for the year, I can't finish it in time this year either, so it's my Long Term project that I'm going to get myself spend as much time as I need. I would like to get the chainmail done this year and just concentrate on props next year.

Moaning Myrtle, (Top, 2nd) a ghost from Harry Potter was going to be for the last Halloween but I couldn't finish it. I am trying to finish this for a small con in February, and to wear to D*C.

Snow White (Top, 3rd) from the show Once Upon A Time. I fell in love with the outfit and I came across the actual coat fabric, so I just have to do it. For D*C.

Padme (Top, 4th) from Star Wars: Episode II. This one I've been wanting to do for 10 years and finally have the skills to do it. I had planned on making it for D*C, and then the opportunity came up for the 3D re-release of the movie later in September, so I'm determined to do it!

Katniss (Bottom, 1st) from Hunger Games. I found the special eyelashes they used for this costume from the end of the movie, and it looks pretty simple to make, so if I can fit it in my schedule I want to try to make it for D*C.

Early in the year I have a potential opportunity to wear Hunger Games arena outfits, so I am trying to do both Katniss and Clove for this event, not necessarily D*C. (Bottom, 2nd and 3rd)

And lastly, Motee from Star Wars: Episode III. The 3D rerelease of this one is a few weeks after Episode II, so right after D*C I want to try and make this one. It's pretty simple, I've loved it since I saw it at the exhibit, and doing a pregnant Padme costume would just be weird to me.

Ambitious, but I hope I can make a nice dent in that list, we'll see how it goes! Myrtle just needs a robe and a tie at this point so that one should be up within the month!

Oh, and the journal skin? Little sneak peek at my plans for 2014 ;)

Katniss is going to Dragon*Con!

Well, this is different... by Verdaera

It's that time again, and I am once again pulling all-nighters trying to finish for Dragon*Con. All of my costumes are wearable (with minor props I'll do if I have time) save one, which I will be trying to finish in the next few days.

If you are going to Dragon*Con, here is what I'll be wearing and when. If you see me on the con floor, feel free to say hi :)

Thursday Night: Reaping Dress Katniss

Friday Day: Reaping Dress Katniss

Friday Night: Interview Dress Katniss (entering Friday night costume contest)

Saturday: Hunting Katniss

Sunday Day: Hobbit (perhaps since I'm not blonde ATM, Belladonna Took?)

Finally some progress :)

I've had to re-do my entire Dragon*Con costuming list, and as of today, half of them are now finished. The four costumes I am bringing are as follows:

Hobbit - Done!
Katniss: Reaping - Done! Needs shoes...
Katniss: Hunting - Have pants, boots, bow and shirt, need jacket and quiver
Katniss: Interview - Making samples, fabric on order

I finished my Katniss Reaping dress last night and I'm quite proud of it. Depending on what shoes I can find, it'll be one of my most comfortable costumes to date.

My hair WILL be brown for this for D*C.

Also, I've started an Etsy site, BagsOfHolding. So far I've 3 items on there, one sold but I'm making more.

Happy April, Watchers!!

Sooooo it's been about 3 months since I updated the journal and I have quite a bit of progress to add. For starters, I've finished* my Hobbit costume.

*I say "finished" because it's wearable, but there are things I'd like to add. A wig, for starters. It takes about 2 hours to get some curl in my hair and I would love to just be able to pop on a wig and go. Plus, my hair will not be blonde for Dragon*Con. I'll tell you in a minute. I also will add a cloak for the December premiere, and one day I'd like to mold some realistic Hobbit feet, but right now I don't have the skill for that. Here's the finished piece:

I've also made a fair bit of progress on my White Witch chainmail. I want to say it's 2/5ths done. I will be drafting the undercorset pattern soon and have been making a pattern for the crown so I can start sculpting that.

And lastly, I TOTALLY added another costume to my list. Yes, I'm a bad girl. It happened by finding a couple replica items by chance. I have gotten completly obsessed with the Hunger Games. I've had the books for a couple years but never read them. I won them as a prize in the Young Adult Lit costume contest at D*Con with my Alice in '10. I started reading them this winter and couldn't put them down. I've also converted at least 5 people to the series. Cinna, of course, is a favorite since he designs clothes and costumes.

A couple things on this: The first picture is my own design. There is an official website called "" that has had a contest fr district stylists, and I decided to give it a go. The first is my design inspired by District 4. The results haven't been announced yet. Next, I decided to make Katniss' hunting costume from district 12. A costume we see her in for all of 2 minutes. But, Hot Topic offered a replica of that bow for sale so I snatched it up. Then I chanced across the perfect boots for it. I am still going to make the whole costume, but for now I have just the pants made. I might remake them, too, if I find more accurate fabric.

Hobbit Chemise and Jadis Progress

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 11, 2012, 9:35 PM

Yaaay, finally some good stuff to show! I finished my smocked chemise for my Hobbit costume. I didn't deviate the skirt because of it's simplicity, but here they are together, along with curled hair and my Hobbit ears from Weta, so here's the first glimpse of my Hobbit costume!

I did a write-up about the chemise on my blog because I thought the info on smocking a neckline and making elasticized smocked cuffs would be useful to other costumers. I have the bodice draped and will hopefully be assembling and patterning it soon.

My White Witch is coming along, it's just like the Alice embroidery, repetative, but looks cooler the bigger it gets. I am out of rings until Friday, but I put in a bulk order this time so I should be able to get at least half the skirt out of it. And I'm getting faster! So hopefully I can finish this in a few months because I don't want to be chainmailing in the car on the way to Dragon*Con!

New Years Costume Resolutions

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 4, 2012, 10:10 AM

Hope everyone had a happy Chriskwanzukah Festivus holiday ;) I got some new costuming books and enough $$ to do a bulk chainmail order- yay! Because I'm blowing through these rings pretty fast. I already have the start of the front panel attached.

Every year I post an overly-ambitious costume resolution on what I plan to do in the coming year, and look back on what I did (or usually did not) accomplish from the previous years resolution. This is what I said I was going to do last year:

And here's what I actually did:

Padme Cut Senate Scene - Full by Verdaera   18th Century Jacket and Hat by Verdaera   Corset Portrait by Verdaera

Sooo, one out of 5 plus added one... The Padme had a lot of layers, technically 5. I did the corset for the Steampunk but the fit isn't right. I'm resolved to not put a lot more effort into making corsets pretty until I complete a plainer one that fits perfect first. I also added the 18th century jacket because I was tired of going to Pirate Fest in non-historical ren-garb. So, let's move onto:

  • White Witch of Narnia- The Big One of the year, already have a good start on it. Only time will tell how fast I can chainmail that giant skirt.

  • Hobbit- I don't even technically need this until Dec 2012, though it'd be nice to wear to D*C. Probably half done with this, I might make a go at making feet but odds are I'll just go barefoot.

  • Edwardian Corset- I wasn't planning to do an Edwardian gown until after the Regency gown, but there's a 1911 corset sew-along going on and I'd like to take advantage of having advice on the fit

  • Alice Ribbon Dress- You see this got bumped from last year. It won't take long to make, but I'll only do it if I can squeeze it in my schedule before D*C

  • Padme Meadow Gown- This one is actually for next years list but I may start it right after D*C in September

  • Regency Corset- I've been wanting this one for a long time and the first one I made doesn't fit right. I want a Regency for next years list, but I may start fiddling with the corsettry if I run out of non-handwork and have nothing else to do.

So, those are my plans. At least this year I have a good chance of getting half my definites done in the next couple months, and that'll be an improvement over last year! I have progress on both my active projects, but as the Hobbit chemise is nearing completion I'll update again once I have a new deviation... soon!

Costume Preview Update

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 17, 2011, 10:22 PM

Hello lovely watchers!

I am going to re-introduce myself and my journal since I picked up a number of new watchers... I have to first thank frocktarts SOOO much for featuring my Alice costume in a Daily Deviation on October 7th, it was such a wonderful surprise! And thanks to everyone for the faves and the comments, of which I tried to answer every one (and if I missed anybody I apoligize!)

As for the re-introduction, my name is Vera, and I'm a costumer living in St. Louis, MO... I graduated college in 2008 with a bachelors degree in Fashion Design, though costuming is my main focus. There's not much in costume work here in the middle-of-nowhere, so for the spring and summer I work in theater costume positions and for the other half of the year I work in a craft store. I spend the whole year working on various costuming projects (not all of which get done, thanks to my Costumers A.D.O.S. ;) ) For the past three years I've gone to Dragon*Con every labor day and hope to continue, and a local con, Archon, in October. Outside of that I'm in the Costumers Guild and the Rebel Legion, the largest Star Wars costuming group for the good guys. I usually start new costumes after Dragon*Con, so most of my deviations in the winter and spring are 'in progress' pictures, with my more finished shots coming closer to and after a convention. I usually like Sci-Fi, fantasy, and historical costumes.

So what I have for you now is a couple of sneak previews of what I have going right now. At the moment, I am working on two costumes... Jadis, the White Witch of Narnia... I am working on her chainmail battle costume. I have no exciting pictures yet as I am endlessly chain-mailling and drafting the underdress. I am also making a Hobbit costume for the premiere of the first part of The Hobbit next December, and if I figure out how to make feet, for Dragon*Con. I am working on a smocked chemise. I also just got in some hobbit ears I ordered from Weta! They were pulled from the same mould as Frodo's ears! Here are some sneak preview shots of that costume.

Hobbit sneak 1 by Verdaera modelling hobbit ears by Verdaera

That's all for now! I usually try to update once a month for progress posts :) Have a happy Hallowe'en, DeviantArt!

Post Dragon*Con Update

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 18, 2011, 6:49 PM

Back from Dragon*Con! I tell ya, the Padme didn't get finished as much as I'd have liked, I had to cheat on a few things, the beading I had done on a separate fabric and cut and applied wasn't as neat as I'd like, but it got done enough for con. I'd like to eventually fix the things I cheated on and the issues that came up, but for now it's in my closet out of my view. I didn't place in the costume contest, but I was awarded Costumer of the Year for 2010 by my fellow Rebel Legion members, which was so much better :) Here are some deviations I just posted of pictures taken by :iconbryanhumphrey: Bryan Humphrey of my Padme, and also I was able to get a wig and make the skirt poofier for Alice so I finally have good pictures of her. I need to look for a better wig though, I kept getting mistaken for Claudia from Interview with the Vampire ;)

Dragon*Con 2011

And, though I swore I'd take a week off, I did indeed start on my projects for Dragon*Con 2012. Actually I'm whipping together an 18th Century jacket and hat this week for Pirate Fest this coming weekend. I have started smocking the chemise for my Hobbit costume, and I've started a chainmail sample for my Jadis White Witch Battle Costume (Narnia) and am waiting for my supplies to come in the mail. :)

Padme coming together

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 5, 2011, 1:37 PM

A lot has happened costume-wise since my last post. Since I am in the building stage of the complex part of my Padme, I won't have anything Deviation-ready for awhile, so I've taken some in-progress pictures that I've added to my scrapbook.

The underdress is complete save a zipper in the back and the separate beading I need to apply to the neckline and collar. I am half-way through beading the collar piece. On the over-dress, I have finished my initial drape of the body and collar/lapel and have been doing a lot of dye tests for all those fabrics. Here is where I'm at:

WIP Padme Cut Senate 01 by Verdaera

I am about ready to start patterning and making the mock-up before I move on to patterning the sleeves. The discharge printing for the lapel Naboo symbols (see deviation for description) was easier than I thought and once I learn what scale I need for the symbols, I'll have having a stencil custom-made for it. Once this is patterned, the overdress should come together fairly quickly. The beading will probably be the last touch. I hope to get this all done early so all I have to worry about is beading and accessories.

Which brings me to my other D*C costuming plans. If I finish this earlier like I plan, I'll have time to squeeze in a smaller project. I'm scrapping the Steampunk for now until I can come up with a proper working corset. Instead, I will be trying to make the strapless scrap dress from the Alice in Wonderland movie. It shouldn't be too difficult to construct, and I now have the perfect Alice wig (not the color I showed before, I exchanged it for a lighter color), and will be really comfortable to wear. I also plan on adding more petticoat layers to my original Alice and raising the skirt.

My tentative D*C costuming plans are as follows:

Friday: Padme Cut Senate (entering in Friday Night Costuming Contest)
Saturday Parade: Endor Leia
The rest of Saturday: Original Alice
Sunday: Alice scrap dress?

And if you were interested in following more of my progress, I post more regularly at my Blogspot account:

Or rather, what's up it's sleeveses.

I don't have much new finished stuff to show for the month, but I've been busily working on several different parts. I've been surprisingly productive despite spending all day sewing in a costume shop, but it's only for a few hours at a time. I'm working on the beading for my padme and a chemiselet for the steampunk, as well as trying to finish off a cotehardie to wear to Ren Faire. On here I mostly post finished pieces, but if anyone is interested in the nuts and bolts of the build process, I've started a blogspot account, which you can feel free to follow:

Also, I've been agonizing over the fact that I never got around to doing a proper Lord of the Rings costume, and The Hobbit will be coming out next year. Problem is, I already have Meadow Padme and White Witch Battle Costume planned for that year, so I came up with a Hobbit design that shouldn't take me more than a month to complete, and I'm fairly excited about it.

Undergarments DONE!

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 27, 2011, 8:53 PM
  • Watching: Monk
  • Drinking: Root Beer

I've had a busy couple months! I'm finally done with all my undergarments for my Dragon*Con costumes! I haven't done a chemise for the steampunk, but in the interest of getting stuff done, I'm probably going to just wear a camisole under my corset instead of spending my usual insane amount of time on undergarments that won't be seen. I just finished the hoopskirt for my Padme Cut Senate Scene Gown.

Padme Undergarments

I also scrapped this piece because it's only partially finished. This is the start of the first part of the dress. I was waiting for the hoopskirt to be done to work on the skirt before I can move forward on the bodice.

Padme Dress

I finished the corset for my Steampunk too!

And lastly, I bought a wig for my Alice costume. It came in darker than I thought, in fact closer to my own hair color. I'm debating on whether to keep it or not, as the other blonde wigs at the store look more yellow bleached blonde than natural blonde. At the very least I might steam some of the curl out.

Alice Wig Test

For the steampunk I'm trying to figure out some kind of corset dummy so I can drape my garments to the corset shape. For Padme, I am working on the beading and the skirt. Starting tomorrow, I'm going to be working in a theater costume shop for 5 months! YAY! Actually, right up until the day before Dragon*Con, so hopefully I can still get things done in a timely manner. We'll see! Night, deviantArt!

Happy 2011 :D

So having successfully finished my Elizabethan corset for my Padme and getting a good start on the bodice, I've started my Victorian corset for my Steampunk costume for this year. First I enlarged the pattern from my Corsets: Jill Saleen book and tried to alter it to fit, but it wasn't working. BUT, I found this link online called The Corsetmaking Revolution. It was written by a mathematician who figured out how to alter corset patterns from books to size using your own measurements and no small amount of math. It's been an ENORMOUS help in getting to where I am now, so if anyone is interested in it:…

This is the draft, sorry for the busy pattern, the fabric was sturdy and cheap. If any of my corsetting friends have advice for me, I will gladly take it :) You all have been so helpful in this learning process.

I usually do a New Years Costume resolution post, but I already did a bit of one back in September. I already have changes though. The Padme is my main costume of the year of course, as well as the Steampunk. The goal for my Steampunk Archaologist is to get the soft parts convention ready, and add props with what time I have left. I will probably move the Hoth Trooper to next winter though, there are just too many parts for me to get that done before D*C. I won't know until I get closer to D*C if I have time for another costume, but based on that I may finish my Parade Handmaiden or do the Alice ribbon dress.

I should have a couple pieces for you this month! If any of my costuming friends also wanted to join the Costuming group I started, please come join! I'll be doing a feature every month where everyone who submits a finished costume will be featured :) :iconcostumers:

Introducing The Costumers Group

There are many groups out there promoting art features for artists of 'all styles', but usually these groups focus primarily on traditional art, and I've noticed a lack of this style group for the craft artisan. I've also noticed many many cosplay groups, but none primarily for Costumers, or the promotion of this elaborate art form. Thus, The Costumers Group was born.

There are many forms of art. Our canvas is the Human Body... and sometimes the Elf Body, or the Faun Body... Our medium is fabrics, plastics, metals and gems. Our works tend to take months at a time to complete, to create a unique image of a character. Please enjoy this first feature, small as it may be, from a few of our members.

Padme Deleted Home Gown 02 by BenaeQuee Harley Quinn by AnariaZar-Rel Bren Lin, Jedi Knight by Verdaera

Please stop by our group if you are interested in joining or want to see more of our art! The purpose of this group is to create a community of Costume Artists; for those who are interested in the works of other costumers, to get critiques from other experienced costumers, and to promote the work of these unseen artists through a montly feature! If you take pride in your costuming work and wish for it to be seen by the larger dA community, please come and join! And if you don't sew yourself but appreciate our art form, come watch us!
