I Support Fair Art Trades Stamp by vera-san I Support Fair Art Trades Stamp by vera-san
I support fair art trades!

Now, this may come across as rude and...maybe slightly egotistical? ;; I really hope I don't come across that way, buuuut I kinda feel like this needs to be said.

I support fair art trades. Meaning? That if you approach someone with an art trade in mind, you should probably be at least around the same level of skill as they are, and be willing to put in as much effort.

I'm not talking about me specifically, but rather, some popular deviants whose profiles I've seen. There are many fans asking for requests and art trades with these people, but, like, if this person makes you a beautiful digital painting and you give them a mouse drawn MS paint picture, how is that fair?

Same with less dramatic examples. A fully colored picture versus a sketch just doesn't seem fair to me at all. I think that, if you are considering doing an art trade, you should humbly keep your own skills in mind and, if that person's quite a bit better than you, maybe hold off a bit? Some people might be too nice to reject an offer, but it's hardly fair for them to put in a lot of effort and get a picture that they could have drawn so much better in return.

....eeep I hope I don't sound rude. Some people might get offended by this, and for that I'm sorry. But really, I just want it to be fair for anyone wanting an art trade, y'know?

Btw, I'm not one of those people who gets 'unfair' art trades. I'm hardly skilled enough to consider myself 'good'. I'm just throwing it out there. :3

Um, enjoy?

For me, a fair art trade is simply putting in minimal effort to your part, since I worked my ass off on mine. Doesn't matter your skill or the quality, I only need to be able to tell you TRIED.

Looks like I'm not the onlyone here who faces this kind of stuff.
Happens to me everytime. While one tries her best to make it look good, another one is ok with smth disrespectfully quickie-draw...
Goot to know things are happening not only to me. =)

(Hopefully, this isn't offensive or anything negative... if it is, sorry.)
I totally agree with this, for my art isn't good as it is. That if I did legit trades, then I'd feel like I'm giving them garbage.

The only reason I do art trades is to trick very good artists to telling what they want, drawing it and just making it a gift/request. Even then, I feel like I shouldn't deserve nothing back because of it.

Hopefully that isn't wrong...

Don't be sorry for expressing your opinion if you do so civilly! Which you did, so there's no problem :D

Though I'm a little confused by your statement. So...you say you're going to do an art trade, just so that you can see what the other person wants, but then make it into a gift rather than a trade? Why don't you just tell them upfront you want to make them a gift? If you want it to be a surprise, it's probably ok to just use your best judgment without asking them, people tend to be appreciative of art gifts even if they didn't necessarily ask for it :D

If you make someone a gift, you shouldn't expect anything back. Art trades are different though. This stamp is old and my thoughts have changed some since making it; I still think that the level of artistic talent should be taken into consideration, but it's also the responsibility of the 'better' (using the term loosely here) to deny the prospect of a trade if they don't think it's fair. I guess I just think both the asker and the askee should be aware of what they're going into and if they're both fine with it then it's still a fair trade :D The original meaning of the stamp was more in reference to people who, intentionally or not, guilt more skilled artists into doing art trades :P

After reading all this, I realize how ignorant I was acting. As you said, I should make them a gift rather then doing a supposed art trade by saying I'll do there part first and tell mine later... only to say it was a gift in disguise. I realize my actions and should of did what you said :3

Thanks for taking your time to read this and I will take all this info for future use.

I don't agree but not for the reason you think. I believe there is no such thing as a skill level.

Art is a very subjective field, I'll give you that! Though is it really fair to say that an artist like yuumei, who can make beautiful art like this: fav.me/d9ngjsi is not at a higher skill level than me, who at best draws something like fav.me/d9v5tao ? yuumei objectively has a better grasp of lighting, shading, perspective, lineart, etc. than I do. That doesn't mean someone can't like my art better or enjoy it more but I think it would be unfair to say that skill level doesn't exist in art. That said, I don't think it would be possible for someone to take all the artists in the world and rank them from best to worst or anything, because there are so many awesome artists and unique styles. But in the comparison like I just made it's very clear that one of us is more skilled than the other xD And the point of this stamp is to make sure that artists who are really skilled don't end up feeling pressured into art trades where they won't be getting something of equal value for their efforts.

Still, I appreciate your insight, thanks for commenting!

i draw with a mouse on ms paint and i feel like i do pretty good XD but yee i never had that problem (maybe one day but...) but i wouldn't mind if they were a beginner and they want to do an art trade because it helps them advice in skills .3. but if a person knows they can do better and just slap line and color on a page and be like "here you go" i'll be kinda annoyed tbh XD

I'm sure you do great! Yeah, this is just me saying that people should be aware of their level of skill so that they don't put another artist in an awkward position xD

I ask for requests if they offer to everyone, but I alert them ahead of time that I'm not a very great artist.
I do put in 100% effort, though.

I understand what you mean. I get that once in a while, but I just say that I don't do trades. I don't know how you would refuse someone politely if I did do trades, though. I mean, you can't just say 'I don't want to do a trade with you because you aren't good enough.'

I haven't had the problem so much myself (mainly because I'm usually the less skilled between two artists xD), but yeah, I imagine it gets pretty awkward! D:

Yeah, I've recently had to put up rules to keep myself from getting ripped off. I also hate it when I do my part and then I have to wait weeks and almost months because the person procrastinates or forgets. So now I wait for the other person to do their part before I do mine.

That's why I had to close art trades. Too many people wanted to trade me some MS Paint, hot pink smears they threw together in twenty minutes. No thanks. |D;

I agree~
(except mouse-drawings can look good though *hides*)

Yeah...I normally ask the person I'm doing an AT with if I can finish my side first before they start drawing their side...
(2 reasons:
1. I'm slow.
2. I want to make sure that they know I'll finish it.)

Although I wonder when I do art trades with people if they think it's a fair art trade... (I admit I'm not very good at drawing, but I'm trying to improve. ^^;)

ah Finally a STAMP that explains everything in all.

I usually get trade requests too, much often from random deviants whom I don't even know. I'm usually indeem if I did not reply rudely back, but all I say is, "I'm busy and have things to finish as an alibi..." But usually people just wanted to TRADE just to get an almost free art. I'm not that good either, but sometimes, I see to it that they are around the same level as I do, and if not, I would just accept if they decline my offer.

it will look more like just a free art... usually people disguise a trade to get an artwork almost free for them. OFC it's not fun at all. Knowing that you spend hours or even days and you get a crappy MS paint drawn or a sketch back. :iconotlplz:

>///< oh yes, it's really hard to turn people down
But I just can not accept art trades that are not equal Q-Q
I spend so much time on my peices and it's just super discouraging if they don't do the same. ( and I've gotten a lot of art trades where I haven't received anything at all so it's no different then taking requests at that point in time. )

So I just say I'm busy QxQ even when I'm not, to avoid hard feelings...

oh thank you so much! *7*//

I just care that the person at least color their pic. Tho sadly half of the people I trade with ditch me and turn my pic into a free request.

The way to avoid that is to watermark your picture and/or request that they show you their half first. If they don't want to show you their half first, then heavily watermark it when you show them so that until they deliver their half, their pic will have a big ugly old watermark in the way ;D

I agree with you sooo much, the only way I would accept the AT as an offer, if the artist has a style that I adore a lot. This can go beyond their skill level, so I really wouldn't care about how much skill that have, as long as I like their style. Even if an artists skills were the same as mine, doesn't mean I'd AT with this if I didn't care for the art style they use.

I agree with a part of this. The second one ^-^
If you offer an art trade, you should do the best you can. OR, have to say you'll just make a sketch ( Sketch trade are fine =D But only when the parts are ok on this fact or that the one who make one have say this first. Then the other can make the same or make a full coloring image if he want to xD ).

But for the part about the different level of drawing, I personnaly don't agree. Most of the time, I chose my trader for they characters/subject, no for they at quality ( even if I prefere to have a beautiful work xD ). But I'll not take any fun to make an ugly character for the best artist for me ... I prefere to do it with someone who don't have a great " level " but that will enjoy my art cause I'll enjoy to make his/her beautiful character ^-^ But we have all the right to have our idea of this :la: It's just mine ^-^

Of course you're welcome to your opinion! Thank you for commenting.

I can completely see where you're coming from. Art comes easier to some people than others, and for me it's usually very difficult for me to complete a fully drawn picture and actually be satisfied with it (because I'm a lazy bum xD), so that's why if I go to all that trouble in an art trade I'd like at least something with as much effort put in in return. And of course effort doesn't always equal 'quality' per se but despite this stamp I'd even take art trades if they weren't as skilled, so long as they were at least trying as hard ^^

Thanks again for your input, I love seeing all angles ^^
