This is an important piece for me... First of all this is my 100th Deviation! It's also very symbolic...I recently quit my full time job to pursue a freelance career. There was a leap of faith in this decision...The dragon symbolizes the doubts and fears of this decision. The knight symbolizes the courage and focus I must have to be a success. There will no doubt be a collision...Basically this is where I am in my life...Will I be a success and conquer my fears or will I fail?

Daily Deviation

Given 2005-07-09
This is what classic fantasy is all about. Epic acts of heroism and bravery in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Clad in armor and hope, the knight takes a glorious Leap of Faith in this stunning print by Adam Vehige

Also viewable as our Print of the Day. ( Featured by lolly )

In all the action of this piece, I have far greater emotional reaction with the horse than anything else. Whether or not he knows what is coming, whether or not he knows how steep the next ridge may be, whether or not the fact that his true chance of making it out of this confrontation alive, is likely very slim.

He still makes the jump.

Loyal and true to the end, even if that end is his eventual death.

Amazing Work!!! The Only Problem For The Knight Is When He Kills That Dragon Victoriously, He Gonna Look Down & See A 10,000 Foot Drop & Say Oh S************!!!!!!!!!!!!. :lmao:

good point... I think in that situation I'd rather hitch a ride on the dragon, keep it as a pet!

Very intense piece, with a good use of focus/blurring. I know it's an old work (and you've probably improved since then) but that doesn't mean I appreciate this piece any less. I think everyone has felt like this at some point in their lives, and it's great to see it expressed so eloquently and elegantly.

I don't know if you're at all familiar with European or Christian folklore, but this, to me, has strong allusions to the story of Saint George and the Dragon, which was really the first story about a knight rescuing a fair maiden/kingdom from a dragon.

beautiful work

Im familiar with the paintings, never read the story though, thankyou so much!
Vawn-O-the-Dawn Featured By Owner Oct 21, 2009
(figured you must have at least heard of it, since you had to have looked up some paintings with this kind of subject/motif)

Very much welcome.

Badass piece my friend! I really enjoy the energy and concept behind the piece. I am a newby when it comes to digitally painting, and i only have about 5 displayed. I really hope that ur freelance career is kickin ass by now. I will one day make that leap of faith as well, but as of now im still learning alot and have got to focus on the current job as a graphic designer. Good luck in the near future bud. :headbang:

Whoa, I love your concept on this. Can't believe I haven't commented until like three years later.

Definitely classic fantasy. I just love everything about this. It's, if you will pardon the meme, epic. The final scraggly bit of ground being abandoned, and the knight-artist and his horse diving the leap of faith to slay the dragon of doubt...with a pen hidden inside the sword maybe. =P I love the concept so much. Faith indeed.

They're so far up in the sky! It's so heartracing and should be a movie scene, honestly. Knight and dragon blasting toward each other, one will go down and the other will succeed. The lightning crackling and all the melded clouds, it's just so awesome. What I love most, though, is how you blurred it so that it's like a sudden slow-motion gone freeze frame. That makes it REALLY dramatic.

Awesome, AWESOME job, Mike, such a meaningful 100th Deviation!
