Description
It’s a buckler, most were made of metal, since at that small size you want something that can take repeated hits. This one’s wooden, which is less common, but sometimes that’s what you end up with. Whether from cost, availability, or just your local lord being a cheapskate.
Bucklers weren’t passive shields. They needed proper training, since you had to actively deflect and control incoming strikes rather than just block them. In more experienced hands they were very versatile, however without that skill, a larger shield would usually be more forgiving to use.
They were also convenient to carry, making them a practical backup something you could pair with a one-handed weapon if your polearm was lost or became useless at close range.
