this reminds me of a crazy Manga called "the fall of the house of West".
it revolves around a superhero named Haggard West, who is always fighting monsters from another dimension, who keep trying to kidnap young kids.
his daughter was obsessed with hunting down the monster who she thought had killed her mother.
eventually, West's assistant (she makes his gadgets) told him the truth:
her mother had accidentally been killed BY her father, when he fired his experimental Plasma Cannon at the monsters' lair!
she didn't want HIM to know, because it would ruin him, so she had made some fake claw-marks at the scene.
