My name is Vasko Petrov. I’m 19 years old and I’m from Sofia, Bulgaria.

Right now I’m a student at the New Bulgarian University. My program there is called Multimedia and Computer Graphics. I’m in my first year there and we’re currently mainly studying mathematics, informatics, and coding. I’m also taking different art classes. In the next couple of years, we are supposed to start 3d modeling and different game engines. It’s an interesting program, that allows students to try a lot of new things and chose which way they want to go in the gaming industry or in the programming world. I’ve personally already found what I like to do.

Growing up I didn’t really like doing that much, I didn’t talk to many people, I just mostly watched TV. I used to love all of the 90s cartoons, they were the best. I loved watching movies as well. I grew up as the biggest Star Wars fan out there. I must have watched The Empire Strikes Back more than 200 times on VHS, which is weirdly the one Star Wars movie that I later found out most kids thought was boring. Not to me though, I was obsessed.

Around that time I started trying to draw. I was terrible at it. I could only ever draw something that someone else had done before me. I used to copy drawings of cartoons and anime characters. That part always bugged me. Even back then I wanted to create things of my own.

Drawing wasn’t my focus though. I quickly started playing football (or as some call it – soccer). At first, I wasn’t that good, but after more than 10 years of constant practice, I was able to get from a kid that none of his teammates like, to someone that people enjoy playing with. It was all due to my motivation and passion. I went through different teams, different coaches, and different places. I was always the odd one in the group, I just didn’t want to be socially a part of the others way of thinking and living. Because of that even though I was a first-team player and the coaches liked me, I was never able to establish myself as someone the other kids wanted to hang out with. And I didn’t really want that either. I just wanted to be me. It was a valuable experience.

I was never interested in school, even though I was good at it. I always had good grades, everything seemed quite easy for me. Unfortunately, I hated every minute of it, especially high school. I had no friends there and everyone seemed to either hate me or not care about me at all. All I cared during that time was getting better at football and going home to read.

Reading was a big thing in my early years in high school. I always liked reading books, but in high school, I read tons of them – fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, classics. I loved every minute of it. At that point, I started reading comic books as well. They changed everything. I was overflown with creativity and ideas, so for the first time in a long time, I started drawing regularly again. I wanted to become an illustrator.

When I was 15 I became an individual student, which was part of a school program in Bulgaria which allowed students to study at home and take yearly exams. I had a lot of free time, so when I became 16 I started taking different programming courses. I figured that the only job I see myself doing was on a computer, so coding was the natural answer. Starting with Java, I then went to web design courses – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AngularJS, Bootstrap, Ionic, jQuery and more. Everything was fun and I found it interesting, but there was something missing.

When I was 17 I quit playing football and I had even more time. I got a strange opportunity to go to a training course at an architectural visualization company called Redvertex. They were a big company and they’ve gotten even bigger since then. I started learning my way around Autodesk’s 3D Studio Max and Chaos Group’s Vray. I was amazed by them and was instantly obsessed. I was mostly learning how to create models of houses and render them, but soon I started modeling different things as well. I was really interested in modeling spaceships and different sci-fi scenes, while also learning a lot about post-production and Photoshop. I was also talking with a lot of people that worked there. They were all older than me and taught me a lot. I spent my whole summer in their office. After that, I was never the same. I became a lot more confident, more focused and actually a lot more social. I started meeting new people all the time, building new and valuable friendships.

In 2017 I got an internship as a graphic designer in an international stand-design company called Easy Exhibit. I spent 4 months there, learning a lot from everyone around. The people in the office were great fun and I got pretty close to some of them. I was able to build a great friendship with a person from there, continuing even after my internship was over. My time at Easy Exhibit motivated me to search for new and different paths in my life.

I aspire to become a great CG artist. I feel like working in the game or movie industry would be a dream come true for me. Being able to create something out of nothing brings me real joy and I want to continue doing it not only for myself but professionally as well. I have other options out there, but I’m going to focus on this one.

I’m really interested in Zbrush and I’m currently learning about it from tutorials on Pluralsight. I know I’ll have to learn a lot more about 3Ds Max, Vray and other software as well.

I want to be constantly inspired and motivated.
