Particle hair for fuzz on top of polygon hair after doing some more particle study. Looks good to me. Particles could use tuning for stills, but plenty good enough for animation.
I'm running the hair from a very simple strip of off-layer cloth physics right now. Not as hard to setup as I thought it would be and it looks great. Fun to whip it around. It's a 3x12 strip (cloth doesn't work well when only 1 quad thick), verts basically individually weighted for 12 bones to damped track, stretch to, locked track (the tangent). Runs plenty fast enough with so few verts.
Never got anywhere with trying to do it with volumetrics. This is better. I don't actually need that many particles to do this, just a few tufts here and there.
Will have to remake scalp + bangs for baseball cap. But I like the baseball cap so I'll do that.
