For some reason I've always had this elaborate theory of what's going on in the 88 series; that basically some calamity has ruined the earth and made it uninhabitable, but humanity hasn't even had the chance to discover whether faster-than-light travel is possible yet. As a result, what's left of humanity has been put in suspended animation and sent off to the closest star in hopes of finding an inhabitable planet. The ship is mostly automated, but still needs a human captain/pilot to make sure there are no errors, the ship stays on course, and to make sure the passengers are all safe and alive in their stasis pods, but resources are very limited, and to have an entire crew manning the ship for such a long time is risky.

To that end, there is a system to ensure that there will always be one person to fly the ship for its several-thousand-year journey, the same person, practically, for generations.

There is a machine in the ship that consistently creates clones of the same person, probably one of the engineers of the ship, to be its caretaker, captain and pilot. When one of the clones grows old and dies, another is instantly created to take her place. 88 is named "88" because she's the 88th clone created by the system, and she, like the other clones, has lived her entire life in isolation and silence in an endless cosmos with no day or night, and no one to talk to. As a result, she has a very unstable circadian rhythm and is prone to bouts of extreme insomnia. Her only clues to what life was like for humanity back on earth are the vast libraries of movies, TV shows and video games that were brought onto the ship, and with no one to interact with, can anyone blame her for being a video game addict? Either way, 88's sad fate is to live her entire life, from birth to death, completely alone until she dies of old age and her successor, 89, takes her place - someone who looks, acts and thinks just like her, and will go about the same exact life course as the cycle repeats for millennia until the ship finally reaches its destination, and humanity can start again on a new world.

Honestly I wonder what would happen if 88 were to spot a little space ship somewhere in the distance and it turns out to be the little girl from Porter Robinson's "Shelter" video lol

Curious to see what 88 would look like in a space suit, perhaps a space walk to make some repairs on the ship?

I'm always happy to see more of 88 but I have to say I prefere the old character. A big part of her appeal and what made her interesting to me was her face, it was distinct and unique. Her somber expressionless face gave her depth, it made her intriguing and would leave you craving for more, wanting to know everything about her. However in the last couple of illustrations her facial structure has been changed so much, she looks like a completely different character, like an impostor. Not only has that changed her persona, it's changed the overall atmosphere of the drawings.

That being said I'm glad to see she's still alive, and to hear you have bigger plans for her!

I have created a backstory to try to fit the artwork above.

"88", real name Diana Miller, is the 88th Caretaker of the sleeper ship Salvation that has been traveling from the ruined planet Earth to an Earthlike world that is over 100 light years away from the Solar System. The Salvation can only go as fast as one-tenth the speed of light, so the ship was intended to take a total of 1,000 years to reach its destination.

Though she appears to be a teenage girl, 88 is actually over 1,000 years old, having spent most of her existence in suspended animation along with thousands of other teenagers dispatched from Earth as its biosphere was slowly collapsing. She was awakened from her sleep by the 87th Caretaker, who intended Diana to take his place while he returned to sleep. To prepare her for her lonely task of overseeing the Salvation's operations, 87 had Diana undergo severe mental conditioning which suppressed both her normal human emotions and her sex drive, making her rather like a Vulcan of Star Trek. Well, not quite; sometimes her original personality does surface anyway and makes her feel very depressed.

Despite her lack of emotion, 88 still needs to be entertained, and she mostly gets it in the form of video games. The Salvation's computer has hundreds of video games programmed into it, but 88 also has access to game consoles that were taken from Earth and were originally owned by an earlier Caretaker who collected them; now they are hers.

About two years after 88 began her duties, the ship arrived at the targeted planet and she found the world to be suitable for colonization, so after the analysis of the world is complete she will  begin reviving the other people on the ship, including the other Caretakers who served before her. Once they are all revived, 88 hopes to have her conditioning reversed so she can live like a normal teenager again (something denied to all the other Caretakers, who served until they were middle aged). She knows that she will likely be expected to have children quickly to help populate the world too.

I know where you are coming from. There is only so much time left in a day for yourself once all the necessary life stuff is done.

So how about doing it is a somewhat unorthodox approach? If time is an issue, a comic will not be possible, how about short immersive paragraphs with a picture to tell a story?

I mean, you have already mentioned that 88 is something of a clone, so she must not have a lot of knowledge around her, so if she has to go for an 'orientation' to explain things to her.

The Amnesia plot device if you will, though it is a newly born trope i suppose. So things like clone orientation vids, mails from clones 87 and below about how to make things work in the ship, etc, etc. Make it look like she is reading all this from a datapad or a giant AI is uploading knowledge to her to show the world's technology advancement as well.

Ah... I got a little carried away there but yeh, hope this might help even a little bit.

Seriously? I have to pay to see the HD version? Hell, the hand doesn't even look right, let alone finished.
Thumb looks all twisted. It's bad enough that I can't afford to throw any money at artists' I enjoy safely,
but when it's for the same shit you used to put up freely for all to see. It feels insulting. You're getting paid
now but that limits what the rest of us can see? If I was able to support you, I wouldn't want it that way.

Patreon is being abused, imo. Shouldn't you & isn't it kind of the point, to be happy enough getting paid at
all doing what you love, that you can afford to release it (possibly later than for patrons?) for all of those of
us who love the work but simply cannot contribute? Thing is, many of us cannot afford this, not because
"oh $1.00 is too much" but because we'd have to pick & choose like crazy between a few faves who we
_could_ afford to support at low-tier levels without risking a more important monthly payment...like food, etc.

I know this probably won't make a damn bit of difference and people will want to start fights, but fuck...
These 88 pics were some of the highlights of my barely-lingering dA-use at all. I'm disappointed.

It pretty much shines through this whole reply that you're frustrated and you actively choose to leave such a rude reply through that frustration. One thing is being angry that people use Patreon, which frankly I don't think is a justified anger. People have to eat. But to take that anger and start rambling about how the art supposedly isn't good enough to be paid for? Maybe instead of leaving a reply like this, you can think about how it discourages artists from wanting to share art at all. Art isn't a community service or something you need to live. Art is a luxury item - a luxury item taken for granted all the time. Vashperado makes a living out of his art and if you don't like that, then no one is forcing you to pay for it. I'll leave this here as an ending note and hope you see some value in it: twitter.com/SaraKatch/status/1…

I understand the frustrations, but we're all trying to make a living doing what we love. It's hard work and it shouldn't be given away for free. Patreon isn't a case of artists trying to take advantage of you, it's actually been the best and pretty much only way artists can attempt to make livable wages by using their hard earned skills. 10 years ago we could only hope to count on comissioned work, and even then, it wasn't much. I understand how it looks to the viewer seeing every artist and creator out there now operating a Patreon, but it's not out of selfishness, it's out of hope that we can actually support ourselves with just our work.

I'm sorry you don't agree with what I feel I should get for my work, but that's what Patreon allows. Each artist can set their own terms for what they feel can be seen for free, and what should be paid for. To me, giving away a 720p image for free is what I feel comfortable with, and I think HD and up should have paid value. Previous art of 88 was free merely because I didn't have a Patreon yet.

Please understand we aren't being selfish, we are just trying to pay the bills.

Fair enough, for sure; but I hope you, unlike others I've spoken to, will respect how I feel that
unless there's something akin to an ongoing comic series, script/story, or a highly polished "complete"
work that can stand alone (unlike 88, being a bunch of a vague glimpses of an idea that all go together)
being offered up, it isn't a complete enough product to be pay-walled. It's only art like that, that to me,
seems about as complete as the average digital music for example, that you pay to own or enjoy.

Not forking over the cash for completed things like that, I find ridiculous; but this? I feel we're paying to
see something that's not very different than movie or game trailers, for stories that might not happen.
If I had to pay to change a YouTube movie trailer from 720p to 1080p or more, I'd be just as annoyed.
At the very least I hope that helps to understand why I am so hesitant, personally. It's a tough choice.
I mean, for all we know, one day you might just get into an art block that never goes away. Y'know?
Despite my worries, yeah, I am glad that it's out there to be used to help artists out, absolutely.

Time is money, friend. I believe that concept art should be paid for. Heck, that anything art related, from an artist, should be paid for if the artist requests it. An artist might put out a piece that is unfinished or need refining, but they are showing their work. If an artist wants to open themselves to critique from any and all onlookers that is up to us. However, it is up to the individual what their preference is, whether it be receiving as much feedback as possible, showing their patrons that their money is not being spent on someone wasting their time, or simply showing their process. If people are interested in what the artist is showcasing, and wish to support them, they will. Art is a wonderful luxury, and like most services, you are paying for the artist's time which may involve hours spent on a single piece.

It is not entirely fair to be so critical of an artist's decision regarding what to put on public display and what they keep for their Patrons. Remember that the artist is providing a service here. A luxury service at that, and everything placed into the public domain is a service rendered free of charge. Personally I am grateful, and believe we should all be grateful, that these images are here for us to look over and to discuss at all. Something else vital to keep in mind is that the artist might be doing what they love, but no one can live on love alone. Doing a job that you love can be heaven, but if you're not being paid for your work, that's not really a job. That's simply a hobby.
