Wow, your skills are really impressive! How long did it take you to finish this?
Now I want my e-violin to be carved like that :la:
vankuilenburg Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2010
this one took a few weeks to carve, and a couple more in the paint shop.let me know about the violin:) is it a solid body?
Feuerkind Featured By Owner Dec 1, 2010  Student General Artist
It looks similar to this one: [link]
I'm afraid there's little space left for carvings D:
Maybe I have to start playing the guitar. They are apparently so much bigger than violins ;-)

Wow, I love it. I want to know what it's like to play too :)

flewdraw @ I don't think that the neck look's too big, but it's a little bit hard to tell because of the angle of the shot.

I'm gonna help you putting the link of your work and your gallery in my own page.

NPCburnsy Featured By Owner Jun 17, 2010  Hobbyist Writer
Gotta show my buddy Bill your page, he's going to love it. He's a guitar god =p I really like this bass, the attention to detail is legendary =) This has to be one of the coolest pages I've found yet! =)
Mana-Ramp-Matoran Featured By Owner May 11, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Do you start from solid blocks of wood or something when you do these, or take a guitar(or in this case a bass) and then carve that out? Cause if I didn't know any better I'd say you took an Ibanez sound gear bass, or something with that style and carved it. Did you do anything with the head stock? And if so do you have pictures. This is amazing work, as you've heard from everyone, but I'm dying to know what the whole thing looks like. Someone else asked what carving these guitars does to their tone, and as a bassist tone is everything to us.

You say that your dream is that your art will be taught in art history classes. My dream is that one day when people name off great bassists who did soemthing with the instrument my name would be on that list somewhere. I hear ya there good sir.

would you mind giving me some price ranges? do you have a catalog available or a website? do you work on commission?
vankuilenburg Featured By Owner Feb 13, 2010
i don't actually have a catalog yet, but i am working on a website. the reason i don't have one already, is that i'm a terrible business person haha:) i'm an artist, craftsman w/ no head at all for that stuff. but i am trying to improve. i do work on commission! what did you have in mind? my prices vary depending on what you want done. from scratch? carve an existing piece? i also have a few finished pieces for sale. let me know what you're looking for and i'll get back to you
much love

well. if you're working you're doing business. Im more a fan of acoustic you build them as well, or do you work mainly on electrics? I am a big fan of mahogany and ebony for the tones they produce. I am putting together a studio, currently with the help of *copperrein She turned me on to your page and we were both blown away by your skill and craftsmanship. my favorite electrics have been explorer style bodies and archtops. Does your carving produce any interesting sonic qualities when it is complete? how well do the pieces age?

If Spawn was in a band, he'd play bass (cuz he's black, obviuosly), and this would be his bass

This reminds me of the game Soul Caliber. If one of the people fought with a guitar, this would be it. Amazing work.

Very very nice. I still think it looks bit macabre. :)
kap08 Featured By Owner Dec 12, 2009
Being an artist and a bass player. I have to ask, is it real. It looks like the body has bee carved into then the color added. If it is really please tape me and let me know how you did it.
vankuilenburg Featured By Owner Dec 12, 2009
it is absolutely real. it's a handcarved solid wood body. it was then airbrushed and finished w/ automotive clear coat. thanks for looking:)
kap08 Featured By Owner Dec 12, 2009
Do people play them? They look to nice and maybe delicate to play.
Again really nice work
