The Temple of the Cat by VanHeist The Temple of the Cat by VanHeist
Since I'm still working on the next round of comic stuff, I figured I'd fill the void a little bit with a repost of some work previously posted on Patreon :)

This series of drawings goes back a few months to October and November, when a minor injury at work had me stuck in the break room for a couple weeks. In that time, I did a bunch of Inktober sketches and a few character concept pieces, but the storyteller itch always catches up eventually.

The story I chose, "Temple of the Cat", didn't come from a regular story, but a song. The song of the same name was originally from arguably my favorite album of all time, Ayreon's "Universal Migrator, 1&2":
As a concept album, each song is part of a story--or, more accurately, a journey--in which a Mars colonist spends his last few hours of life in the Dream Sequencer, a machine that allows him to "preincarnate" into the past. At this point in the journey, he experiences a moment in the life of an ancient Mayan girl as she makes her pilgrimage to the temple of a jaguar god.

Here's a link to it, if you wanna take a listen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg2Wxm…

It's a wonderful song, and like many of the songs in the story, beautifully evocative. So I ended up trying to tell my own version through these illustrations, based on both the source material and my own imagination. I never got around to completing the story, or expanding upon the original artwork. What you see, like the other sketches I did at the time, is the bare bones of the gel-pen ink sketches in a 5 x 8" sketchbook.

For now, this is as far as I got. Frustrating, I know, to have an incomplete story. I hope to finish it eventually, if I find the time. Given my history of persistent work-related injuries, maybe I'll find myself stuck in the break room with nothing to do again in the future, and the story will continue.

It's a refreshing side-journey into something decidedly different from my Bomango stuff, and I sort of became enamored with it. I hope you enjoy it too!

See ya soon!

Though I hate this song (This is the only song of Ayreon that I don't like), I have to say that this comic is pretty good!!! :-)

Chriist the atmosphere I get from the imagery here is completely different from the song.
The comic feels FAR darker than the song feels, tbh I was disappointed when I opened the song.
It fits, but not in the way I thought it would.
Only know Ayreon for The Human Equation, love that album.

Very good album. I like it too.

Though I had fun drawing these, the imagery is much more colorful in my mind than black and white allows, so it was a little limiting in what I came up with on paper (as these things often are).

Even if you don't finish the story, the final frame feels like an ending itself. Very solid work.

Your inks are so evocative, they made me curious to listen to the song, and I got instantly hooked. I'd never heard of Ayreon before and now I can't stop listening to the album. Thank you for introducing me to this incredible artist!

It's always fun to break out a do something different.  And this was a pretyt cool concept. I had never heard of Ayreon before.  And listened to the album because of this.

You probably already know of them, but have you ever listened to the Alan Parson's Project?  Same vein.

AND Star.One, and Arjen's other stuff, but "Migrator" is still my favorite as a whole. This piece here is just the most literal translation of Ayreon's inspiration for me, but there WILL be more ^^;

A very cool strip; in my opinion, you have captured the mood and the feelings that come out from the song. The song itself fits very well to be listened to while reading the comic. I like it a lot!!Clap Clap

Yeah for real! It would be interesting to begin the series with the first song in black and white, then add color with each piece as the speaker goes backward through their past lives. Kind of like how the album becomes increasingly more hopeful and upbeat with each song. I would try if I didn't have the attention span of a goldfish. O_o

That's an interesting idea for a way to render it. And the album does build as it goes to two climaxes: the first is that exhilaration of "The First Man on Earth", then it sinks into the sadness of the dream ending...and then you'd get an explosion of color with "Chaos" as the sequencer starts up again: "Screw it. We're going ALL THE WAY BACK!" :D

Yeah, the second half would have a completely different feel too it. Outrageous colors, abstract shapes, etc as it moves through the universe. Would be really awesome with water colors.

Tales of high adventure, in The Hyborian Age.  One man would be made king by his own hand.  That which does not kill you, Conan, makes you stronger.

No one told classic tales of 'Sword and Sorcery', quite like Robert E Howard.  The man, literally created a 'mythos' from his musings.  That is a remarkable accomplishment, in and of itself.  And no one could have played the stone faced Cimmerian better, than the Austrian Oak, himself.  Schwarzenegger just didn't play Conan, for all intents and purposes, he was Conan.

I just wish I could efface the 'stigma' of the 2011 remake.  GOOD GOD!  That abomination of celluloid was a blight on the industry.  It was one of the most abysmally, appalling remakes, that I had ever had the distinct displeasure of witnessing.  It took everything that was great about the original and utterly 'bastardized' it.  I was importuning for John Milius to deliver me from this travesty.

Some of the most salient and meaningful songs ever written have come from concept albums.  There is usually, the expression of a singular theme or vision, from the artists.  There's a clear focus to it, and the content of the album is centralized or revolves around that expressed theme or vision.

Take for example, Beautiful Midnight, by The Matthew Good Band.  All the songs on the album, are circumstances and events, that take place approximately, over a 24hr period.  The album features songs that are beautifully eloquent and powerfully poignant.  Most important of all, the album 'resonates' for the listener.  They can identify with some of the album's content, in some way.

The songs we tend to remember the most, are those that we identify with or affect us on a personal level.

As it happens, the day I discovered this song was the day it was reported that Chris Cornell had died. Talking Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog in a conversation with my friend led to this song coming up, and I was hooked :XD:
