The Kharkov Displacement
In early September 1965, as the harvest season drew to a close, workers and officials across Kharkov Oblast in the Ukrainian SSR were awakened by a freak lightning storm. At least 113 luminous "bursts" were reported, apparently originating high in the atmosphere. The storm had not appeared in any meteorological forecast, and officials working through the night complained that the phenomenon seemed to be disrupting long-range radio broadcasts and telephone calls beyond the oblast.
Soon afterward, outlying facilities reported abrupt power failures. Utility crews were roused and dispatched to inspect transmission lines that extended beyond the oblast’s jurisdiction. They returned almost immediately.
«Дороги нет! НЕТ ЕЁ!» — «Что?» — «Трасса на север — и ЛЭП тоже! Обрываются… просто обрываются. Как ножом отрезало. Ровно. И лес за ней... лес не наш. Всё неправильно.» — «Успокойся!» — «Звоните в милицию, поднимайте всех — делайте же что-нибудь!»
