Daily Deviation

Given 2009-08-20
According to the suggester, Washday at Iwo Jima by ~ValkyriesVampsVixens shows us that "washday can be fun for the watchers!" This photo is a clever and well-executed parody, and contains genuine humor. But it runs much deeper than that when you take into account the respect and seriousness offered by the artist in regard to the source subject matter in his comment exchanges with other deviants on the image. Makes me smile - more with its cleverness than its funnyness.
Without the ability to smile and laugh on things even victories in wars are worthless and pointless, and so are the sacrifices.

What a disgrace. I understand things like the Star Wars parody over there, but this is cheap and stupid. Every soldier in the original picture is continually rolling over in their graves.

I understand the element of parody and lightheartedness in this (or that others have described to be in this, anyway), and while a parody like this commenting on freedoms of various kinds is well thought out, the gratuity with which this was executed makes me a little sad.

Ok I should really log in to DA a bit more often, I have just noticed the response to this and spent some time reading through all the comments ... I wish I had time to respond to you all but its not really practical ... so my apologies for that

However I will say this ... the image is whatever you want it to be,
Its designed to hold up a mirror, to you the viewer ... in its inception it was supposed to be an exercise in liberation in all its guises, I had not considered parody but its ok if that’s what you want it to be ... Rosenthal’s original is not without its controversy so im delighted this simple picture has incited its own (two years after it was taken)... that in itself makes it art which I find slightly embarrassing because I don’t actually think its technically a very good picture ... there are way too many positional mistakes (however it was at the top of a Welsh mountain at seven AM and it was bloody freezing!)
The original image transcends any socio-political boundaries its probably the most recognisable image of the twentieth century, its a global icon which stands for many things (versions have been used to promote everything from punk bands to Ikea) which is why I chose it as a starting point ...

Now if you have to consider the image to be nothing but parody ... I lost relatives in WWII which I am old enough to have remembered had they survived ... I grew up on my Grandfathers tales as a POW in Germany ... they all fought for my right to express myself freely, to not do so would be the greatest dishonour ... Im a socialist and a pacifist I’m not weighed down by the chains of patriotism ...
I wonder if those that believe the horror of war should not be parodied will be going to see Inglorious Bastereds ... personally I will and with extra popcorn

I did not know the original picture (yes, I am actually ashamed at that) you derived this from, so I did not see it as a parody at all. To be honest, I just found it quite funny and overall nice to look at.

When I read your comment, I realized there was more to it, but I still do not see it as a parody. But then I am not one to try and put too much meaning in a photograph, especially what you could call "light" entertainment like this (no offense intended) :)

Ironicly "Flag on the Reichstag" was inspired by Rosenthals Iwo Jima image ... I was going to make this the next image to recreate but unlike the bear hilltop needed for the first image, Location is an issue with this one ... the only place I could find that looks the same with a similar street layout below was Cardiff town hall ... permission was denied on H&S grounds they said it would be too dangerious to have a naked model leaning out from the rooftop without safety equipment ...

he he , that s the picture i couldnt find, that one was on my mind.

I see it s an irony that barely masks an horrible truth: america's totalitarian becoming. in this context the nudes are there as a hint to the "new clothes of the emperor" great work man

you should maybe display all the pics in the same work. ( remember kossuth )

you labeled the foto as conceptual work, so i think if the concept stands, you could make a collage. message first, form later.

cheers

England's moved on from the War. America has not. Simple.

I am not going to take sides, as I - as a male - enjoy the sight of these women, but also respect the noble sacrifices of the USMC at Iwo Jima.

I will take this at face value. For, what would be the point of enjoying freedoms if we cannot first indulge in them?
Not partaking in freedom of expression is, in my eyes, a slap in the face of those who died to defend said freedoms. Enjoy this while it lasts.

Regards,
-Justin.

Using the freedom of expression they gave you to make light of their sacrifice seems like a slap in the face too. Like I said before, I might be missing something here, and I believe in the right to put up a photo like this. But I'd like to know if there is some meaning behind it or if it is just there for the shock.

I don't think there is a meaning. I tend to dig for meaning in many things as well, so perhaps there is none here.

I know exactly how you feel though. The need to understand that which may never be fully understood.

The content in this image, for me, is ambiguous. I can't determine whether this photo was intended to make a serious critique on the social role of women or a parody using beautiful nude women as objects of popularity gain.

Is the objectification of women here an intentional pun?
