Brothers' Fight by Valesco Brothers' Fight by Valesco
brothers' fights are what seem to happen 24/7 in our world, especially considering africa...sudan, somaila
and of course many more. (hm...but i drew white skin? i guess due to custom)
my first "political" submission, with a deeper meaning behind. i sketched it in university, where we studied the topic: migration and development politics in africa...
please comment if you want to add some meaning or discuss my interpretation, of course also if you want to discuss the art itself ;)
thanks for contributions!

i tried to enhance the artifical quality of the pic by using another background stock from :iconarghus:
thanks for that!

thanks to arghus for the grunge paper texture!

oooch! now i see the mistake in the left hand: the forefinger's anatomy's not quite correct...

really good, feel the background could use a little more something

I like the choice of texture for the background and the gradation from dark to light. The blood splatter and droplets help with the grungy look.

I feel as though you have a lot of dead space in the background. It might have been nice to see more in the image than the background, which does look good, and the arms.
Given that your concept seems pretty broad, including African issues with migration and politics, it seems to me like you might be able to think of some other components for the piece.
If you didn't want to add more things, maybe just crop the image a bit?
It is important to not have the image too cluttered but also not have it too empty. It's sometimes difficult to find that balance.

You have some good detail in the hands but I feel some of the fingers are a bit stiff and awkwardly placed. The joining of the arms and the 3 elbow joints are a bit confusing to me. I think some more detail in the fingernails might be good but that's just a little nitpicky thing of mine...

I like the highlighting in the coloring of the skin. I think some darker areas would be nice. You have lights and mid-tones but you don't have the distinct dark areas to help bring your highlighting out fully. Since you have the dark area in the upper left-hand corner, I think darks in the arms would make sense.

If I understand the concept correctly, it might have been better to not have both of the arms the exact same skin tone. Maybe include some more identifying characteristics in the arms like jewelry, tattoos, scars, body hair, etc. To me this felt more like a struggle with the self than another. From your artist's comments I think this is meant to represent a struggle between two people or groups of people.

hi, thanks for this honest critique, i will try to elaborate on it, you gave some good hints. but nevertheless i believe that the similar look of both hands is adequate here, to show that it is the fight between people who are supposed to treat themselves as equals...
nevertheless, designing one of the hands different, makes also sense in terms of emphasizing the individuality everyone must be allowed to possess, along with an equality in front of justice, law and politics and so on...
let's see to it in the future ;)

If I hadn't read the title and artist description - would have thought that this was symbolic of an inner struggle - the "shalolin" concept of the fist forming and about to be covered by the open hand... A conflict between anger / rage felt within... and the mentality to suppress that, to stay in control...

unfortunately i dunno the shaolin concept, but i think you described it very well. i think this is possible aswell, since i drew one left and one right hand, so this could be the hands of one single person. so it's good to have people not reading the description immediately to make further interpretations possible! thanks for contributing!

Very interesting that they're joined at the elbow; it shows a sense against one's self almost to me.
