The Mountain Pass

The mountain pass was his territory. He had defended it for many centuries. But even dragons got old eventually. Age showed in his scars and his arthritic joints. His vision was failing and many teeth were missing. But he was a relentless beast.  He was a well-fed animal, a successful hunter that preyed on the ogres and cyclopes of the region. His belly hung and the flesh of his neck wobbled. His scales were dark umber and his eyes blazed with fiery fury.  His legacy lived beyond. Generations of dragons bred from his seed. He was the prime example of survival of the fittest. But even he knew, this large and proud beast, that his time would come to an end. More and more younger males were coming forward to challenge him, sensing his advanced age. Thus far he was successful, but he was growing tired.  The old dragon looked down from his perch in the mountains, a scent on the wind. Another dragon. Another challenger. With a groan the old beast rose. His massive wings beat at the air.

DA + Netflix ... The Umbrella Academy Premiere!

Earlier this summer, Netflix reached out to DeviantArt with a really remarkable request: to prominently feature some fan art during the red carpet premiere of one of their biggest shows … The Umbrella Academy! Based on the comic book series written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrated by the magnificent artist Gabriel Bá for Dark Horse Comics, this Netflix series revolving around a dysfunctional family of time-hopping superheroes has been a massive hit since its premiere in 2019. So when Netflix wanted to partner with some of our creators, we made it happen! From an absolutely massive selection of incredible fan art for The Umbrella Academy on DA, Netflix selected deviations from more than twenty artists to showcase in the lobby of the world-renowned Egyptian Theater in Hollywood during the red carpet premiere of Season 4 of the series. There can be only one ...

I have never been great artist. My talents lie outside of drawing, painting, and illustration. For instance, I am a great conversationalist and an excellent public speaker; but I digress. Although most of my artistic attempts have ended poorly, there is one painting I completed years ago that defies my personal losing streak. Thanks to a magical, mystical, miraculous “Paint Night” fueled by wine and driven by a humbling desire to not embarrass myself in front of my extremely talented wife, I produced this Bayou-inspired sunset scene. It’s far and away the single best work of art I have ever personally created and I never again attempted to paint after that night. I still have this painting prominently displayed in our apartment, reminding me daily … “Quit while you’re ahead" 😏
