Samantha had just finished her third twelve-hour shift in a row. Her eyes were tired, her back ached, and her ponytail had given up hours ago. But for once, she felt good—really good. She’d finally caught a decent night’s sleep before work, her scrubs were freshly pressed, and the lighting in the nurse’s lounge wasn’t half bad. So, during a rare lull between rounds, she propped her phone up, tilted her head slightly, and snapped a selfie. She looked at it and smiled. Not bad. The blue of her scrubs brought out her eyes, and for the first time all week, she didn’t look like she’d just wrestled a defibrillator. “Damn, I look good,” she said with a small laugh, hitting “post” before she could talk herself out of it. It wasn’t vanity—it was survival. A nurse needed a little confidence boost once in a while. By the time she returned to the floor, the ER had exploded with chaos: two car crash victims, an asthma attack, and a kid who swallowed a Lego. Hours passed in a blur of adrenaline
