John Milton, in his epic poem Paradise Lost, used the name "Pandæmonium" to describe the capital city of Hell, built by the fallen angels after their attempted Coup d'état against God. The city of Pandæmonium and its palaces served as the high capital of Lucifer and his fellow angels who were relegated to the underworld for their new kingdom. Here Lucifer continues to rally the fallen angels around him as the Stygian Council goes about its Daemonic business. "Pandæmonium" roughly translates as "the-all-demon-place".
This scene shows an extensive nebula as the backdrop to a single tortured planet. This is the planet Pandæmonium, a Super-Earth with crushing gravity, a poisonous atmosphere, and endless volcanism. A perfect location for the fallen angels of John Milton's poem. In many ways I think this scene is a perfect metaphor for "Paradise Lost" since this world had every chance to become a second Earth, literally Heaven, but instead it turned from the light and became the epitome of Hell.
The nebula in this scene is about half of the total image that I painted using Photoshop. All features are derived from cloud images that I photographed and converted into PS brushes. The planet was created using Vue and procedural terrains. Photoshop was used to assemble the final image.
