Newgen Start Menu Widget by usteg Newgen Start Menu Widget by usteg
Presenting the Start Menu widget!

In an effort to try create widgets that will reduce the reliance of the original Start Menu, this is the final result. You can browse All Programs through this widget (as shown above, eg. Browsing Administrative Tools), and you can pin programs for easy access later (you can choose to unpin them too, however, you'll have to refresh the list to see it get fully removed).

Not only that, you can access almost all Control Panel options through this widget.

Let me know what you guys think, and whether there are bugs/room for improvement

Hey. Will need some assistance on this one. None of the folders show up when I click All Programs. And most of the buttons really don't do anything at all.

aah, that would explain it. The way XP and Vista/7 creates the Start Menu stack is different, and i've only implemented the algorithm to read Vista/7's Start Menu. With the lack of input from XP users, I didn't really think it would be necessary.

I will include XP support for this widget in the next update

look for the newgen directory, and just unzip the file into the widgets folder. You should see it listed with all the other widgets when you want to add a widget in newgen

the administrative tools menu is under accessories, under All Programs. I am considering adding an extension into the Control Panel though

1) After checking, it seems that not all shortcuts are listed under the path I used, and that some are stored in a user-specific folder. Will try to work around that

2) As for the font color, shall I include a customization option for that, or shall I just go with a dark color?

I'll be working on 3 widgets concurrently after this, so the next release will probably be in a week or two. I'll be working on a Power Options widget, an improved music widget and the recycle bin widget; the only big one will be the music widget, the other 2 will be rather basic

I don't think customization option would be needed; just dark font would do.

This is when I have a mental breakdown and begin to scream and cry and rant... I'll do all except rant as it'll get no one anywhere... but hey, for a fellow Deviant, could you upload them :) please, even if to a separate site downloading site... I'd be VERY grateful!

Great widget... I didn't know that was even possible. Newgen just got lot better with this widget. Now I would hardly need to return to desktop.
Just a couple of problems -
1) I don't see all my programs listed when I click All Programs. I see all the folders; but not all the other program shortcuts that are there when I hit All Programs from Start Menu. Likewise, when I click some of the folders (and this happens only to very few folders), some programs are seen; others are missing. E.g. when i click Microsoft Office folder, I can see programs like excel, access etc. But Word is missing. Similarly, when I click Asus folder (I have Asus laptop), not all the Asus utilities can be seen. There are 10 of them; but I can only 7 of them. So i guess this happens only with those folders that I have many files in it like 8 or 10 program files in it. But that's just my guess. Or is it related to windows 7 64 bit edition? As some programs are installed in C:\program files while others are in C:\program files(x86). But I don't think that should be problem.
2) Names of folders are in white font color over yellowish folder color, making it very hard to read. Can the font color be changed to black or something dark?

All other links are working fine. Control Panel options are working great. Pinning/unpinning is no problem. In fact everything looks just fine except the two problems I mentioned above.

Many many Thanks for this widget. What's next?
