Comm for :iconphraxus: of his OC Tarja, looking a bit surprised at something. Possibly one of these other commissions.

I'm thrilled with how this piece came out.  The outfit and expression suit Tarja so well, and the balance between muscular and bustular (that's a word, right?) is fantastic.  You captured Tarja's un-self-conscious innocence perfectly here.  I love it!

The lack of details (cloth straining/wrinkles, muscle lines) gives this drawing a fresh look and I really like that.
I may try that too at some point as well. Great job as always :)

My best work typically involves the least lines, such as when you're designing animation.

That's interesting. I suppose more details works on one shot drawings (portraits, pin ups, landscapes.)
I can't imagine the nightmare that it must be in animation to animate intricate details Sweating a little...

The more elaborate the character design, the more expensive it was to animate in the traditional sense. Its part of the reason that the DC animated universe looked a lot cleaner and consistent than the stuff Marvel was doing at the time; Marvel tried hewing too close to a comic book appearance and as a result their visuals were inconsistent and frequently off-model (X-Men was one of the best examples of the worst offenders). WB understood that the visual language of their DC series should be simplified for the medium they were being developed for (TV).

I personally like working with fewer lines; most of my work on PCC was a lot simpler in terms of character visuals.

Hmm, I gotta ask. When drawing concept art, is it better to do more details in that stage, so that later you take them out once you get the final reference for animation?

I wanna get into animation, but I'm having such a hard time on creating character designs. I never know when it's too much or too minimalistic (Like certain cartoons nowadays)

The concept art stage allows you to do whatever you want in terms of detail, as it establishes the important elements of the overall design. Simplification is easier once you know what those design elements are and how they define the character silhouette.

Ahhhh, I understand now.
I thought that you had to have the sillhouette in mind before you even started drawing the concept art. Im gonna try doing a lot more concept art on my characters then. Thanks for sharing that info :)

Well, the silhouette is usually a good starting point, but you still have to sort out the elements that fit inside that silhouette.
