Visit Scenic Ulthar

I am (very briefly) freed from illustration duty, and so I am burning through all the art I've been wanting to make for ages, and apparently that is manifesting as "Art Deco Travel Posters." (My booth at Anthrocon may look very weird this year...)

I am not good at Art Deco, which is probably why. As the great book Art & Fear pointed out, a technical challenge is not as good as an artistic one, but it'll do in a pinch. It takes awhile to get down to very simple, very clean shapes. Still working at it, not there yet.

I suspect I'll be doing a few more of these, perhaps for scenic Echo Harbor. For now, if you'd like to order one, we got 'em.

(If you don't know Lovecraft's "The Cats of Ulthar", this will make no sense at all.)

It just hit me. You're the author of Digger (among other things). I love that series and own them all! It's brilliant.

Aw yiss <3 This is good stuff
Even aside from the subject matter (which I love anyway), this is really solid work.
I think the minimal set of shades and stylized forms comes off as darn elegant.
Reminds me of something.  Art Deco maybe?

You say you aren't good at art deco but this is fantastic.

Are you familiar with the work of David Lance Goines?

I would love to visit there. :3

Hehe ...
"He stretched out his arms toward the sun and prayed in a tongue no villager could understand; though indeed the villagers did not try very hard to understand, since their attention was mostly taken up by the sky and the odd shapes the clouds were assuming."

I do know Lovecraft's tale, and I love this poster!

And don't say you're not good at Art Deco! These posters are super awesome, all of them! They're perfect examples of that style as far as I'm concerned.
I think in Deco, everything must be stark, spare and linear, even things that aren't. My impression of your work is that you tend to make things fullsome, rounded and sort of supple-formed, even when they aren't. But I'm no art critic.

I look forward to seeing more of these.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.  This looks so authentic, it could have just slipped away from 1927.

I'm a big fan of both Lord Dunsany (whose work influenced the story) and of course Lovecraft himself.  I'm not a cat person, but harming them is a very bad thing.  Being devoured by the target of your abuse is most appropriate!

This is AWESOME. I kind of want to see a hint of a pupil in that eye, but it's still killer as-is. <3

I know Frank Belknap Long's "The Hounds of Tindalos"... does that count?

You should do one for the beautiful city of Sarnath as well.

This makes total sense to me!  It was one of my favorite Lovecraft shorts!  Awesome!

Could've fooled me that you're "not there yet."  This looks amazing!  Nice!  :highfive:
