Jacana and Hippos by ursulav Jacana and Hippos by ursulav
Another piece in homage to the shin-hanga print style, particularly that of Yoshida Toshi and Yoshida Hiroshi, who traveled the world making prints of various sights they saw in their travels. (Not a bad way to spend a life!) Some of their stuff is so amazing that there are no words.

This is an African Jacana standing on hippos (and yes, I actually saw Jacanas walk around on hippos in Chobe Park. Hippos are apparently very laid back if you're a wading bird and not, say, a boat.)

Photoshop & Painter. Prints available at www.redwombatstudio.com

I love this. The colors, shapes, and linework are just so beautifully harmonic.  It has a great sense of warm floatyness.
I have to admit that at first glance I thought the one just back from the two in the center was floating on its back with its little feet up in the air. But then I realized that the toes were the ear tufts.

Heeheehee!  Ancient art technique + new technology = very successful image.  I love the way the simple two-tone color and shade give us all the depth we need for each critter and its shadow on the water.

Excellent sense of a stopped, thus timeless moment.  Captures the classic Japanese print style and palette perfectly.  Great anatomical highlighting and well-chosen details.

After coming back to, and admiring this, several times already since it was posted, the foremost word that comes to mind is "subtle".  The colors, the curves, the overall composition.  Really satisfying, understated, and assured.

This is excellent, Ursula. When, between hamster illustrations, were you able to make the trip?

This is something else! Thanks for sharing this work, and I'm so excited about these artists you were inspired by -- I hadn't heard of them before, but they have wonderful art. :) I love how you did the shapes of the hippos in this picture. You really captured something special!

You can't get rid of me that easily! (Mostly I have to cram these in between doing hamster illustrations, that's all.)
