Thought I'd draw hot book Ron so here you go Atomic Cock

Who else should I do next? Harry and Hermione are on their way, maybe I could do like a series of such "grownup" portraits, I'm kinda feelin' it Chew

Ron the troll, moRon and many other names. I wonder where Rowling commited a mistake in a creation of this character that he is the most despised from all main characters in HP. Even gits-in-canon like Snape and Draco have many fans, when goody-goody-Ron doesn't. Even in fanfictions he is usually a sidekick and nothing more, and of course a plenty of Weasley-bashing. In fanfiction.net in more stories as a featured character in a search engine are Harry, Hermione, Draco, Snape, Lupin, Sirius, James, Lily, Ginny. When the third member of the golden trio is even less popular than his sister and James with Lily who had been already died in the books.

I know!! I don't understand it either. And even I myself, if we speak about drawing, don't draw Ron as much as he deserves. And he totally deserves it! And I love Ron! To me, he's the most realistic character in the whole series! So what's wrong?? I don't get it... Ron deserves so much more, and the Weasleys too.. Why is he so neglected then? Why do I neglect him too?

I don't call him realistic, for me he is exagerated in the books as a glutton and idiot, who doesn't do much, usually only eats and follows Harry with ocasional outburst of jealousy, I read opinnions of many people for whom Ron lost their good graces in the GoF or in the Hallows. With The Weasleys is a problem they are just a big walking cliche of poor but noble, even for me when I was reading books as a 13/14years old kid they were just annoying, especially Molly. I'm not suprised that the Malfoys with their "evilness", beauty, money, and a dark glamor of antiheroes are more appealing for people's imagination than quite boring good people.

For realistic characters. I don't see many of them in HP. Those started as childbooks where characters don't have to be realistic but interesting for kids, so they have to be fit in their roles, as a main hero, a side kick, a villain. Snape is a good example as a mean teacher, a typical character for childbooks in school settling.

Ah, I see! Well, I agree that Harry Potter is definitely full of typical archetypal characters, and that characters like the Malfoys are more appealing for those reasons. But I disagree with the rest :) The fact that I see Ron as the most realistic is based on my personal experience, so yes, I think Ron is very realistic, as well as some of the other Weasleys (Ginny not so much). To me, "annoying" and "boring" doesn't mean exaggerated or unrealistic, but rather the opposite. :) The fact that he's flawed--in fact, so flawed that, as you say, he lost readers' good graces when he made mistakes--is what makes me appreciate him so much and connect to him. In my opinion, I think he embodies some of the negative qualities that are not evil but fairly common, and that’s why people dislike him. Because maybe he reminds us sometimes how flawed WE are.

You see I don't confuse annoying and boring with realistic and unrealistic. For me both the Weasleys and the Malfoys are unrealistic characters who are just fit in their plot roles, but one of them are for me annoying, and the Malfoys aren't, well except Draco in the books. But he is annoying because he is too deaply set in his plot role, that it makes him poorly written character and unsuited in his role. He should be a powerful oponent, dangerous, instead we get a whinning idiot, who cannot do much and is just like early Neville version 2.0, because at least he can cast some spells, but he is totally imcompetent. As I read the hallows the first time after the premiere, in the RoR battle I cheared that they maybe finally kill Draco, because he was too annoying and stupid for me... I would prefer powerful, dangerous anti-hero, instead of this idiot. Draco should be a dark magic Harry, not a magical Dudley Dursley.

With the matter is how much flawed him is, with him flaws are just too big or exagerated, there are some small bit of a good side, but they are just overshadowed by his bad side. Even for me manyhis succeses are deus ex machina, just like his OWLs results, too good for a boy who isn't a genius and isn't shown as a studious type, or when he imitates a parseltongue in the Hallows. For me Ron, Draco and Sirius should have been written differently.

Also Hermione has flaws in the books, especially in early books, later she is too much Rowling's self insert, but people tend to ignore her bad side, and write too often her as an ideal character. I saw even comments under of better HP fanfics , where Hermione was descirbed very close to her from books 1-3, but in those comments people accused an author of writting Hermione-bashing, because this Hermione was a perfect Hermione, but arrogant,  teacher pe, informant, thought that she knew the all truth and all others were wrong.

Wait, so I got a little confused. Are you saying that JKR has made her characters too childbook-typical, or are you saying that she should have portrayed the characters as more archetypal in an appealing way? Because it seems like you're saying both? So I'd like to understand what argument exactly you're making! :)
Either way, I think it's a bit strange to say, "the author should have written this character this way." That's very subjective and biased, but, I mean, it's your opinion, so sure! But I can't find it in myself to agree with you :)

Edit: Oh, but I definitely agree with what you said about Hermione. I always have trouble reading fanfiction where she's made into a perfect girl. I mean, again, I love flawed characters, which is why Hermione is one of my favorites, and which is why it feels unfair when her character is ripped off. But oh well, it's not that I really care, everyone's free to write whatever however, it's not like I have the authority to police everyone's character portrayals :)

I can say that the Weasley and the Malfoys are in their roles and that is why they are who they are.  I don't have too love all characters in the books who are supposed to be the good guys and hate all characters who are supposed to be bad guys. I'm not a kid anymore so the goody goody two shoes are now quite boring for me, but more dark characters are more interesting :) Also for me now, Lucius isn't a bad guy, just a smart politician, not an idiot like Arthur who even didn't take bribes to help his financial situation :D

For Draco and Ron, I know that they are in their roles, one as an enemy and one as a sidekick. But I think they are poorly written. Both are idiots, but diffrent kinds of idiots. Even in their roles they should be written diffrently. Draco should be more dangerous, powerful, a worthy opponent, and Ron should be also useful not only an eating machine, especially for later books, where he is even more an eating machin, and Rowling did everything to forced him and Hermione into a relationship. There is also a problem with a lack of anti-Hermione in the books, there is no a well described nasty slytherin girl, Pansy certainly isn't like that. Preferable that should have been Draco's sister.

I of course mean, that Hermione in that story I spoke about, wasn't a pefect Hermione, but kinda annoying know it all in diffrent kids' eyes :)

Also that's important for me.
I think books 1-4 are excelent, in their genre child-literature, but the later books who are more young-adult fiction are for me less interesting, and I just don't have any will to reread them.

Sure! Interesting to read a different opinion I suppose :) Including one about Draco too. Sure, I would have enjoyed a Draco who's much more "dangerous" and worthy to be a proper Harry's enemy, but I also like that JKR didn't make every evil character like that. There should be good guys like Ron that are "average," and there should be bad guys like Draco that are "average" too. I mean, maybe you're right, maybe the average ones shouldn't have been Draco and Ron, but again, I haven't been in the fandom enough to be bothered by it I suppose. When it comes to Harry Potter in particular, I take and enjoy what I'm given, at least at the moment :)

I'm a big fan of antagonists too though, always was! But I also tend to have a very soft spot of underrated characters, such as Ron and Neville :)

Book Ron is definitely hot!  (I read some comments below and I need to admit I've always liked him and he's been one of my favourite characters in the series, hehe, I was confused that so many people didn't like him :D) The expression you gave him here is perfect!!! :nosebleed: Cool piece!

Wow, this Ron is really handsome, pretty hot actually. In my mind he's not that handsome, in fact for me Ron is average, even if for me Rupert Grint is cute. But, I really like this portrait, I think it's the first drawing where I found Ron hot.
You should draw portraits of Draco, Ginny, Pansy, Blaise and Theodore; and of course, Hermione and Harry. And more Dramione, of course hahahaha.

In my mind Ron's pretty average too, though I never imagine him as Rupert Grint. But the portrait is of him being all grown up, so why not make him hot too, right? Puberty can be a bitch, you know :D (Big Grin) Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

I'm definitely doing Draco and Ginny, but I haven't even thought of drawing the other slytherins, so that's a cool idea! Pansy and Blaise could be fun, but I'm not sure about Theo. He's got pretty much no character in the books, so I wouldn't know what to do with him. I mean, it is mentioned that he's a bit of a tall, skinny, quiet loner kind of a guy, and I guess that's what I would try to capture in the portrait because I usually prefer cannon over all other different portrayals of him in fanfics. But now I'm actually quite compelled to try and draw him, it's just that perhaps it's not gonna be what you would normally expect :) (he'll still be hot though!)

Honestly if Ron would look that way I would even consider liking him ;) hes definitly not my favorite character but this painting is really nice.

But.... Please dont stop doing Dramione ;) :P i'm a bit pushy am I?! I'm sorry i cant help myself i just adore your art <3

I totally get not really liking Ron, though I still find him charming in his own special way :D He's just so real to me, meaning that I consider his character, strengths and weaknesses much more realistic than Draco's. Nevertheless, it's enough to glance at my gallery to know who I like better Llama Emoji-01 (Laughing) [V1] And wait till you see the portrait that I'm doing for Draco!

Thanks by the way! And don't worry, I'm so not done with Dramione yet, but I still like to try other things out. Especially when I'm not drawing anything but HP fanart which is utterly shameful
AngelSeraphim86's avatar
I can totally understand that you want to try different things, dont get me wrong. And I enjoy really all of your art. (The one with Ginny and Harry is one of my favorites). But I don't think its a shame when your "only" doing one thing. Inspiration is just like that I think.

And for that matter, what can I say I'm currently writing a FF and your art is a great inspiration. My Husband constantly tells me i should write a story on its own, but what can I do when a certain Idea got stuck ;)

Cant wait for the Draco Portrait, i'm looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing your Art!
