GIMP 2.8 Pen Pressure Help by Universal-Tiger GIMP 2.8 Pen Pressure Help by Universal-Tiger
Download for a much clearer visual!

Well I had a problem with this myself until I finally figured it out. I hope this serves you well! I know it looks very boring, but hey this is to help people not to win an art competition.

EDIT: This may not work for some people, and if that is the case there are a few other methods you could try, so if you ask I will do my best to be of assistance

EDIT 2: Okay, so sometimes this doesn't work. I've got a lot of comments down below with a TON of other ways to cure this issue, so give the comments a look!

EDIT 3: :iconbubblehun: Has put into words what was needed a bunch of times. So, if this tutorial doesn't work, this should:
Go to Edit > Preferences > Input Devices > Configure Extended Input Devices, select your tablet (for me there were two buttons, Wacom Eraser and Wacom Pen Sensitivity) and set the "pen" option to "Screen." The default "pressure" is set to "3," if not, make sure it is.

Thank you sooooo much. I spent ages banging my head against that wall until I decided to search online for a solution, and there I found your very clear steps. SOLVED!! Yay! It works like a charm. Thank you Universal-Tiger. I am so relieved.
Gosh darn it, GIMP won't recognise that I'm using a tablet... It'll let me draw but nothing except 'Core Pointer' will appear on the list of devices in 'Configure Extended Input Devices'. I updated my driver yesterday, too. I will return if I find a solution to this, in case anyone else has the same problem in the future.
I found it out, and as someone said in the comments, all I had to do was use my tablet to open GIMP without touching the mousepad. This didn't work the first couple of times I tried it, but that might have been because I used the mouse at some point or another before going to Input Devices.

This tutorial is great and works exactly as advertised.

Thank you so much for this guide! I've used an older version of Gimp until now and would have never figured this out by myself (was getting a bit frustrated here, as it's one of the most important features I've been using.. ^^" )

My tablet doesn't appear on the 'input devices' screen. It's plugged in and functioning, but it's not on there. I don't know why. Should I uninstall and reinstall Gimp?

The screen thing and the dynamics thing aren't working.. I have a Huion 8 x 6 tablet, can someone help please?

Nevermind, I got it running! In case anyone has the problem where this doesn't work whatsoever: go to the website of your tablet and install a new driver! I ended having to install my tablet's new driver and go to the input devices and set it to screen along with the dynamic, it's beautiful! Good luck everyone!

So I first started using my tablet a LONG while ago (About a year I think), but just started needing pressure sensitivity now, and I'm not sure if I installed the drivers (From what I'm seeing, it looks like I didn't), and I can't reset my computer all the way back to then. Does anyone know what I can do?

It only worked until I closed GIMP. I've done all of the steps over and over but now pen pressure isn't currently working.
FlamingSalyut Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2016
Okay, I have a serious problem in regards to pressure. When I set my tablet it "Screen", all it does is both drags around the canvas, and rapidly right clicks. When my cursor leaves the canvas and tries to come back, the brush gets stuck on the canvas' edge. I've disable that pen setting that makes right click=hold. I've uninstalled both gimp and my tablet over and over, nothing.

My tablet's a Ugee m1000L, on windows 8.1.

I have the same problem with an Ugee, I think it must be the tablet

Adding up to this--the tutorial didn't work for me at first until I came here and saw that my device was disabled.
Keep a lookout on that too, guys.

For anyone using gimp on a windows surface device, it will not work at all. Gimp for some reason will not support the surface pen's pressure abilities for some reason.

When I did all of that (description included), my tablet brush lags. ):  Is there any way to fix that? I've looked everywhere, but all of the Gimp help threads said that it was fixed years ago.

Oh man, I JUST received a Wacom Cintiq for Christmas, and I've spent the past 4 hours setting it up. Your tutorial here was the FIRST and ONLY thing that worked to finally get my Gimp to recognize my pen's pressure sensitivity in terms of line width! Seriously, I was lost before I read this. I'm so glad and grateful to you for putting up this tutorial! You saved me!!!! Now gimp picks up all my fancy stylus' pressure sensitivity levels and does what I want it to do with those pressure sensitivity levels!!! I cannot possibly thank you enough for this. Nowhere else was I able to find the info that actually worked. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! God bless you and the mother who bore you!!!

I can't even enable the matrix for manual editing. It is grayed out. The mode of the pen is always "disabled". If I change that, the pen right clicks when I try to draw and a new entry gets created upon reboot with mode set to "disabled". The old entry gets grayed out.

The tab is fine. It works flawlessly with the Photoshop trial that came with the driver.
sbcontt Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2015
Mine is just right clicking when I try to draw. Each time I change the pen mode from "disabled" to "screen", the old settings goes grey upon restart and a new pen entry gets created with mode "disabled". The matrix is always grayed out.

Thank you for this tutorial! I checked the boxes I wanted, but it still doesn't have pressure sensitivity. Any tips?
Universal-Tiger Featured By Owner Mar 20, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
You could try...
1.) Restarting the computer
2.) Make sure that you opened the program using your tablet, not the mouse/trackpad
3.) Remove your preferences off your tablet (may need to do so more than once) (under the control panel on your computer)
4.) Go to Edit, Imput devices. Click on WACOM Tablet Pressure Stylus (or whatever tablet you have) and make sure the "pen" mode is set to "screen." Save. (also, The default "pressure" is set to "3," if not, make sure it is.)
