Ghost in the Shell fan art + coloring time lapse by Underseaspots Ghost in the Shell fan art + coloring time lapse by Underseaspots
And now the colors! I proceed with the coloring of the fanart of Ghost in the Shell. Starting from the flat colors I added a simple solution to lights and shadows with a slight processing on the ambient occlusion.

You can check out the coloring time lapse on my official Youtube channel! -> youtu.be/RQEff3w-JAI (Please subscribe!)

Thanks!

This is so brilliant!  Motoko has all of her prosthetic bodies available for ghost-hacking based on the situation.  No one has done this art before.  I'm going to make it one of my favorites if you don't mind.

I like the Shirow-era types best.

now that is some great shit

I especially like how you tastefully hid away the live-action one's face. Nice touch.

Thanks!

First concept was to have her lay down in front of everyone, but with her presence diverted the focus of the image.

So i decided to hide her behind the couch, like "she's there, but she's not so important".

Do you agree that the live action movie is just a SHELL without any GHOST?

I would, but even the shell don't look right in the first place.

And I'm not talking about ethnicity I'm talking about the whole thing.

Like soneone said "it's made by people who watched Ghost int he Shell, but they not understand it."

It's a pastiche of graphics, plot and design stuff from all the Ghost in the Shell franchise.

Yeah, but filtered through mid-2000s post-Matrix scifi shlock clichés,
filtered through a dozen writers who only read wikipedia articles about GitS without even understanding that it's a whole franchise,
filtered through execs who think it's just "robocop mixed with blade runner" and don't know Shirow even exists,
filtered through whatever WETA workshop thought would be cool,
filtered through Kuciara's stupid ideas of what "retro scifi" looks like,
filtered through that dude who worked on CoD and makes everything look bland,
filtered through a director-for-hire who watched the 95 movie once and thought he had Oshii figured out,
filtered through a bunch of aging actors who don't give a shit,
filtered through a DP who thinks teal filters are the coolest thing.

And let's not talk about the music.

It seems also the perfect description of Ghost int he Shell: Arise, made by Bandai without any real Production I.G. involvement.

man.... so many motoko's! okay, i will guess: i see 2004 SAC motoko sleeping and i see the 1995-96 version and the 2013-14 version with short hair. very humorous yet i can see why all versions of her seem to be sleeping. perhaps they were tired after a long mission or looking for cyberbrains. oh, i see a fuchikoma tank in the manga and movie versions. very good piece and i love the color version. oh, mysterious motoko,Heart Heart Heart Heart very good.

Thanks! The concept of this picture was to have lots of different version of Motoko in the same picture. They are not sleeping, they are "ghost less corpses", since by the end of the first animated movie the "real" Motoko is the Doll, born from the fusion between the Major and the Puppet Master. In this picture she's the only "awaken" body and she's watching, directly, the viewer of this picture (you know, the famous "fourth wall").

ah, by the end of the movie (spoilers) the motoko i saw real closely she's a doll and man that last scene is cool and maybe a mysterious way to end the movie (end spoilers) this is a cool picture and i see 2004 motoko and the 2013 version. i never seen the 2013 version and she looks a bit young though. but i like to check it out. i think motoko is a better character because she was a one woman leader in a team of powerful men. batou's good but often he and the major are like more than partners they never had any down time and then they in one episode make out and in the solid state society movie, they hold hands. i say this is like a good couple like the other masamune couple of deunan and briareos. oops, i rambled so much. thanks again!.

Dunno if that's what makes her a good character. She doesn't rule them in a womanly or motherly way; she mostly just bosses them around, and either maintains a cool aloof posture to assert her authority (SAC, movies) or hangs out and jokes around with them because she's part of the team (manga)

so really what makes her fun isn't so much the fact that she's a woman in a position of leadership, it's the fact that she's a cool-headed serious lady and/or a rowdy tomboyish brat.

It depends. Motoko in the movie she's not a Woman in a team of powerful man, she's just a badass, because Motoko's Oshii is totally asexual. She doesn't have any problem to strip in front of Batou or go around with that revealing optic camouflage suit, but Batou turn her head while she's undressing and give his jacket to her to cover her.

Just two simple gesture that define two major character.

yeah there isn't much that defines Oshii's characters, so even the tiny gestures appear very significant, but things aren't very clear.

Could mean that Batou is her emotional anchor to humanity/reality cause he still treats her like a person; could mean that he hinders her cause he can't see what she really needs, could mean that he idolizes her but can't handle her, could mean that she needs him even though she doesn't realize it, who knows?
