Looks awesome, Mike. I still remember the moment you put up the "Free commissions!" sign at Fanime a few years ago. This is something else entirely.

haha, thanks! i'm still drawing for free though, haven't quite made the leap to paid commissions yet. yeah, those were the good ol' days...

I personally think this looks pretty darn good. it would look awesome if you just cleaned it up more xD

I know you're coloring this currently with what seems to be one source of lighting, but don't forget that there will be some backlighting too...

what do you use to color anyway? o.o

thanks! it was much better in my head, but i don't quite have the skills to put it to (digital) paper yet :-)
it's definitely on the rough side -- one day i'm going to have to do a fully-rendered piece just to see whether i can actually do one, haha. the main thing i need to work on is organizing my tone values better, and starting to develop my color selection. i always forget about the backlighting -- it usually does wonders for the lighting!
i'm trying out the schoolism/bobby chiu method of doing the whole pic in grayscale first, then adding some colorize/overlay magic to get the final colors. i know traditionalists really frown on this method, but unfortunately since i'm a late starter i have to take any shortcut i can to catch up. but while i think i have an idea on how to organize tone/value, i have no idea how to organize colors. if you have any suggestions on where to learn, please let me know!

I'd just say watch the people who have an art style you like and learn from them (kind of like what you told the guy at fanime) observe and replicate what you like and make it your own

The only problem with the grayscale first and adding colors is that I feel like the tone of colors isn't very interesting. The fun is in the mixing of colors to create your lights and shadows in my opinion

just always, think about your lighting source :O most tutorials will tell you to start coloring with a base color, then add your lights and darks. There are many tutorials on DA. Try this place out :) [link]

that's very true -- usually grayscale + color layers comes out with pretty washed out colors.

for me the hardest thing is figuring out which color to pick -- when there's 256^3 combinations, my brain gets stuck :-P (i.e. for a color in shadow, should i make it more/less saturated, or cooler/warmer, or some combination...?) it's going be quite the mountain to climb :-)

thanks for the tutorial link!

Thank you for doing my request!

Uwah~ You made me a very happy person seeing this when I got home from school XD I was surprised you finished so soon! That was very fast (and I bet you were also doing other requests too!)

This style is really nice. I really like how Samus' face turned out. And heehee! I couldn't help but giggle at seeing Adam's face hidden by his hat. Drawing him, he can be a very frustrating man to draw XD This is all really nice! Thank you again~

oh, hahah, my mistake. thanks, though! i'm pretty happy with how her face turned out, although my faces are starting to converge on one generic type. didn't see you at fanime this year! (might have been my fault, i was pretty much behind my table the whole time.)
