Yes, that is the advice of all great artists, the trick is motivating yourself to do it!  Given a choice of doing figure studies or trying to fully render out an epic character, the easy and more interesting choice is definitely the latter, but in the long run the first choice will be more beneficial.  Practice makes perfect, one you build a strong foundation you can build your epic art house on top of it.  Gahhh, time to practice what I preach, will start doin more studies each and every day, whether it's a mere 1/2 hour or an all day event, it's gotta be done.
