Some minor changes

Photobucket

We have decided to restrict the file size that you send us for the Gallery.  Any file over a meg will be rejected and you will be sent a note of explanation.  Included in the note will be a link for a freebie program that you can use to compress your file, if you don't already have one.  When we have 20 submissions, we just don't have the time to sit and wait for long download/upload process.

We have also shortened the "artist's description" and provided only your icon and a link to your artwork.  This isn't going to stop the drag 'n' drop maniacs, but hopefully it will help. :D We are also showing smaller version of your images in the fullsize view.

We are trying desperately to keep art theft at a minimum.

No problem at all. :) I think the smaller view will also remind people they are viewing a club submission. I am sometimes guilty of forgetting, but that usually gets my attention. Thank you for your efforts.

Thanks for the input from you all.

Don't be alarmed, we aren't going drastic on you, the changes really are slight, and mostly benefit those of us who work in the Gallery. :)

I don't know if you have checked the last 10 or so uploads, but we have changed the wording in the description and we are making the largest size 800 x 600 or the closest we can get with cropped images. In some cases we are simply downscaling them using dA's menu. Reasonable images of between 600 and 800 will be uploaded as is, for viewing purposes.

File size and image files size are 2 different things. If you upload a file for printing the file size will be huge, so most of us pick a screen/image view that is much smaller and we don't allow the original image to be downloaded.

As far as mis-faves go, until IT actually gets around to re-doing Groups and their galleries, we are going to get some. Drag and Drop is the enemy and should be stopped in all galleries. Also the first thing that the person sees when opening a gallery image is the Do not fav message, not the image. Sort of wishing in one hand and spitting in the other, I know, but that would help.

Thanks for clarifying that Michele - again, I do apologise for reacting the first time round!

Surely the full image would only be available in any case if download of image were enabled?

Anyway, I think what you're doing is perfectly sensible :)

Thanks =AnnaKirsten, I'm glad we got that cleared up. We've had to make a lot of changes in the way we do things since I first took over the group. A lot of traditions that I first had recommended I keep have gone by the wayside. This is the first time (I think)that I've made a major change without consulting the members, but it had to be done. I was losing gallery people right and left, and this was one of the biggest complaints that they had.

That job certainly is extremely time-consuming, particularly if there are a lot of requests. I perfectly understand the reasons for the need to change things there :)

Thank you Anna.

Oh and can you send a note for the image for our files?

Certainly - just sent one to the club; I should have done that, but wasn't sure at the time if it was small enough

We really scared you didn't we? :giggle: Shame on us!

It might take a while to get to it...:iconmarthig: is helping but at this time she doesn't have tons of time. Then again she's sort of like you, she has tons of stuff going on on her page. Her journal is miles or should I say kilometers long. :D

Great idea to cut back on mis-faves Michele! It will also help you (and sometimes I) get them into the gallery quicker!

Maybe we could also use that nifty "Do Not Fave" plz. I can't think of the account at the moment...but I'll poke around for it. Its 2 icons wide, so it should get a little bit of attention!

Yeah! :)

I had the first half of the plz right, but I couldn't remember the second half to save my life!

That, and I've not spent much time here lately, especially looking for icons. Thanks Chris!

I'm very glad to hear you are reducing the display size of images - not just for reasons of potential art theft but it seems to me that it might also encourage people to go to the original deviation to see a larger size version, which can only be a good thing in my view.

Have you decided on a maximum display size at all?

In answer to Anna and Ersi I think the issue is not with sensible image sizes (like the one Anna linked to below - even the "large" view image is reasonable), I have indeed come across some images that are several MB in size. When DA is busy or having a bad day these are noticeably slower to load, even on a fast cable connection like mine. There clearly ARE some people who do not optimise their images in the slightest and I can understand how this would be a nuisance for group admins to deal with.

Thanks Chris for that input - I wasn't at all sure what happened with the file size as opposed to the image size, if you know what I mean. My first reaction was due to the many MB needed for print sizes, but then I started to wonder...

Thanks again :)

I have the same question as Anna Kirsten: why do you need to download the full file-size -that is probably unaccessible anyway, at least I hope so- and not the image size file? If we upload for prints, we will naturally submit many megabytes.

Hi Ersi,

We do work with the image file, but some don't compress their files and they are huge. These are the ones we will be rejecting, not the reasonable sizes. If you check the latest images loaded to the Gallery you will see what we are doing.

I'm not sure if I've got any of that right after all..

This one [link] for example shows two factors both in the larger and the smaller view; File size 7.1 MB, Image size 357 KB. (Same in whichever view you look at.)

If you were to download this file, and the image properties say 357 KB, is that the size you're getting, or are you downloading an image of 7.1MB?

If its only 357 KB, then I cannot imagine anyone possibly showing something that's over 1 MB in size?

Anyway, if this UF image is within your limits, I'd love to know, and in that case I apologise for my previous comment, as that was based on the image on display actually being loads of MB! (Its all a bit confusing since, by all accounts, dA automatically reduce the file-size of the displayed image?)

Btw, feel free to include this one for a submission if you'd like to, IF its within the size-limit you've set, ok?

So what you want the submitter to do then, is to do several uploads for various purposes, i.e.
1. Upload small file-size for display and submission
2. Upload full-sized file-size for printing of normal prints
3. Re-upload same again for each of the other facilities we want to include for printing in our shop.

I find this unreasonable.

* Could you not do a poll here to see what people feel (other than yourself) about the small sized image shown on the deviation page being uploaded instead of a specially made large one?

* Why do we need a special program to shrink the file-size, when this can be done from PS, PSP or whichever image editor we use?
