Around mid 2017, I finally got the honour of working with an ol' favourite DA artist of mine,
who is currently the Art Director on SEMC's Vainglory!
Just got cleared to post this up, so I'll preface this by saying this is obviously not the Cherry-red paint scheme that was eventually decided upon, but I am super happy that practically all the other ideas leading up to this point made it into the final product
I won't get too much into the details of the brief but we had settled on him being a younger, hotshot pilot Baron, with a nod to what I thought was an established John Lennon reference. That inspired me to go for cheeky hybrid Vietnam-era colours, along with a familiar Ion Cannon ingame strike decal that I tweaked ever so slightly...and repurposed into the peace symbol you see plastered against his side.
I'm quite proud of his transformation sequence that I had submitted to the team as I went through sufficient pains to technically not have him -completely- shatter his spine and still 'fly' in relative comfort... while hopefully maintaining a utilitarian and robust construction style to the armour, with hints of brutal weight savings where needed (the swing-out feet/shins double as vert stabilisers). (He initially was proposed with more humanoid 'high heel feet' but Carlo wanted the skids) Also note the thigh-mounted Rocket Launcher that fold out into stub wings during flight and hanging Porcupine Mortars mounted under the engine/tail boom assembly.
Both flight and ground profiles were worked to hint at feline features -which I had inquired about after looking at Baron's armour and lore. The weapon was probably worked over more than the overall suit lol, had to stick to familiar proportions while trying to make sense of it in when presented in the context of an aerial weapon during Heli mode.
Happy bush-jumping! That's all I really wanted to do in his Heli mode.
Hope the fans out there enjoy this Baron variant!
