Edge of Tomorrow: Pitch Art 1 (2010) by ukitakumuki Edge of Tomorrow: Pitch Art 1 (2010) by ukitakumuki
So in early 2010, director Rupert Sanders invited me to work with him on pitch material for a movie called All You Need Is Kill (… adapted from a Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka with illustrations by Yoshitoshi ABe.

I was never paid when the film got picked up (not that there were 'proper' contracts in place, but in my naivete back then assumed the best in people, and besides, even armed with contracts, pursuing international lawsuits that costs many times more than the work done doesn't make sense to me.) but I have to say that from a creative standpoint this gig that lasted maybe a week was thoroughly enjoyable. Some of the ideas discussed were truly fantastic, and moral discussions aside I found Rupert to be quite a visionary. From an artistic standpoint, I only wished that I could have been better equipped in skillset at the time to deliver more.

For the job, I was shown previz work by Legacy effects and was asked to put my spin on things. One thing in particular that was asked of me was to revisit the desgns of the powered armour, Rita's axe as well as the dropship and mimics, and hint at the ash covered LA in the settings I would portray them all in.

The general direction of this image was to portray Rita and Keiji fighting "as though they are in love" even though they're pretty much submerged in sci-fi hell. One of my favourite parts of the image was showing a trooper getting flung about like a ragdoll, and his mind-controlled micro-missile launcher spewing rounds as it misinterprets his pain as a signal to fire.

That looks so much better than the exosuits in the movie.

Armor ftw.

Urgh, that fucking movie, I swear every theme from the book was turned into its head.

Your image is a lot better and a lot more faithful to the source. Sorry you got screwed over.

God, that armor is sexy.

And also, you know, the murder-tornado.

ok this is badass

I would have loved for the movie to look more like this :O
squarenuts Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2015
I think the studio wanted the aliens to look more mechanical and not organic like in the book. The "Climate Change" crowd can't let the public see movies in where Tom Cruise is attacking mother-nature.

I am seriously disappointed that you weren't compensated for such and incredible pitch of spectacular concept art. Grrrrrrrr....

Your work still has me picking my jaw off the floor, even though I know that ok should expect it, yet I keep getting the same awe shock as if it was the first time I have seen your work :-)

Absolutely inspirational

Wow... this is just... wow! :O
I have come across your gallery many times before, so it is about time I say hi. I like both the movie and the manga, but I never read the novel. This would have been great, of course there is nothing wrong with adding different or extra stuff in remakes or reimagining's if done right. I still like the idea of Rita's axe, but it is cool that movie Rita made her's from a helicopter blade. No doubt as a result of improvising from her many loops. XD

I wish the movie had been more in line with these concepts, particularly the books portrayal of Keiji's relationship with Rita. This concept art is pure awesome, both as interpretation and as art. That said I still enjoyed the movie, and its a shame you weren't compensated for your work.

You ought to see if some publishing company would use your artwork on the covers of future book publications of "All You Need is Kill". Might be worth a shot right?

Sorry to hear you weren't paid properly.

Don't suppose you know anything about the forthcoming Yukikaze adaptation?
ukitakumuki Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
Only the barest of facts, like Tom helming it.. :) Do you know anything interesting beyond the casting?
lkj0987654321 Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2014
I wish! But everyone seems to like Edge of Tomorrow a bunch, so I'd say things are looking pretty good for Yukikaze getting made at the very least. I'm not optimistic that they'll keep the meditative mood, but here's hoping, eh?

They'll probably call it "Snowborne" or something.
ukitakumuki Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
haha snowborne... yeah edge of tomorrow got pretty close to the meditative aspects for an action flick, or at least alludes to it despite the pacing.

Whatever it is, Maverick dogfighting aliens and shredding nukes in a canyon while reverse vectoring floats my boat nicely, if that were to be preserved hahaha

Yukikaze seems more like a Tom Clancy kind of thing to me, where the feats aren't the result of human skill, but fantastic hardware. In particular the arms race with the JAM in the book, where they mention hypervelocity missiles and energy weapons, seems like it'd translate well to film. I get the feeling though that Yukikaze will be assisting Tom instead of the other way around. Instead of machines taking over the war from humanity, it'll be humans kicking alien butt all over the place. Oh well, as long as it feels strange and alien in some respect I'm sure it'll be a good watch.

I'll have to see Edge of Tomorrow at some point, then!

one word.....awesome!!!

I love this piece. No problems with it and ukitakumuki should have been paid for the work.

But I'm going out on a limb and say that I really did not have any problem with the armor style they went for in the movie. I don't think it was a matter of budgets but a conscious choice. As someone mentioned earlier, it looks once removed from our current technology. Same for the Osprey like drop ships they used.

I think the fact that they went with hardware that looks just familiar enough keeps the setting grounded and in a way made things feel like the present instead of the future.
SpleeSpree Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2015
Agreed. I think the "feel" of the movie's universe was near perfect. I am normally VERY hard to please when it comes to "power armor". Most designs are so fantastical that they take you (or at least me) out of the story. It feels less grounded, so it becomes a little hard to get immersed. In this film though, they some how managed to introduce an entirely new doctrine of infantry warfare and make it seem almost believable. The suits were clearly designed to LOOK like they were designed with function first in mind (regardless of whether or not that actually would be ideal). Another great thing about the suits was that the exoskeletons were real, so the actors could be filmed in them, reducing the amount of CG use (which I think is a major plus). And, finally, it does allow you to see the characters' faces.

I also have to admit, the use of axes in the novel (didn't read it, just read about it) seemed ridiculous to me. First, because axes are not the melee weapons I would choose, and second because even with power armor, they seem impractical. At least as a staple weapon. In the film, I like how they made Rita's "sword" a repurposed helicopter blade (though I question how strong that would actually be). Based on the trailers/screenshots, I though it was going to be an actually service weapon, which was just too outlandish for my tastes. But an individual soldier creating her own fighting technique around a different weapon that she created? I can handle that. The suits, and the enemy, allow such a weapon to be reasonable in this universe (even if it's no replacement for projectile weapons). I happen to believe that an upscaled, semi or fully auto shotgun would be best for most soldiers. The SCAR-H seems a bit underpowered and low capacity for the close range combat that it is used for.

I also agree with you on the dropships. Engineers have been dancing around quad VTOLs for decades. But it is hard to make one that looks both functional and cool at the same time. This one fits the bill quite well.

As for this picture, I do like it. I just don't think it would have translated as well to live action. There are things that work in graphic novels that don't work in "realistic" live action. That said, I'm sure it could work in a very stylized film. I remember seeing short clips from "the Chronicles of Riddick" and thinking they were ridiculous, until I saw the actual movie. A very self-aware stylization can be a nice break from the norm.

You know what cracks me right the fuck up about this? I was just showing someone your Starship Troopers piece and saying that I wished Edge of Tomorrow ended up with a look more akin to your mechanical designs. And kept the Japanese title. But definitely wanted it to look more like your art. Kind of shame it doesn't.

When i found out that Edge of Tomorrow was based on a Manga I decided to read it.  When i found it and saw Obata's name on it I went ape shit.  The Manga is amazing and your art work is great too.  I would have been pissed if I never got paid.

I'm realizing now that these two are using melee weapons because they can't run out of ammo--- because when you are able to kill more enemies than you have bullets, you need a better weapon.  :P

Your level of skill and ability to interpret large-scale ideas and make them a reality is simply fantastic.
From your work in Warhammer 40k to this, the amount of detail you add is incredible, and I respect your work for the obvious interest in the projects you undertake.
