Jack the Plaid by uhlrik Jack the Plaid by uhlrik
"I'm also Plaid Jack Clarity, the Tartan Sorcerer, Walker in Infernal Flames, He of the Intersecting Lines."

I'm pretty sure I've posted fewer than five pieces of fan art (including this one) on my gallery here over the past decade plus that I've been on DeviantArt. As a general rule, fan art isn't something I'm very interested in creating. However, as I've been pondering my need to get back into drawing seriously again, this image popped pretty much full formed into my mind and I had to put it out into the universe. I wouldn't call this a fully realized piece, but creating it was a refreshing and enjoyable exercise.

Jack here is one of the core cast members of :iconjoeengland:'s  long-running and excellent webcomic Zebra Girl ( zebragirl.net/ ) and all credit goes to him for creating this fascinating, well intentioned, flawed, idiosyncratic and profoundly human archwizard. If you are at all interested in urban fantasy that has heart and retains a sense of wonder, even whimsy, underneath its often dark trappings, then do yourself a favor and take a gander at Joe's work. This particular rendition is supposed to be a little older and perhaps wiser Jack than we're seeing in the current story arc. Anyhow, I hope that you like it!

I'm really digging the layered texture and drawing! Nice and clean! There's also something very wood-block print about the drawing too. Makes it seem dated and that seems to work super well with the character design. I like that a lot!

Thank you! I love doing woodblock and linocut prints, so it makes some sense that my drawing style would connect with that, I suppose. I hadn't thought of it that way, with regards to this piece!

Wow.  And I was just wishing that Zebra Girl could receive fan art now and then, like she used to.  It's certainly a fine gift for my birthday!  Thanks, Uhlrik.  Thanks very much.  It's wonderful.

Hey, thank you for creating the guy in the first place, and for taking the time to take a gander at my work! And happy birthday! If you want to put this one up on your site when the fanart page is back, I'll be happy to send you a file without the DeviantArt watermark.

Do you think how I handled the way his shirt completely vanishes into the plaid background works, or have any other critique for this piece? If so, I'd love to hear what his creator thinks I could do better with. :)

I think it works great.  I'll be glad to put this up in the fan art page when I eventually get one again!

Awesome! Would you like me to e-mail you the file, or would you rather get it some other way? My smoke signal skills are a bit rusty, and the cats got my carrier pigeons, but I'm sure I could work something out. ;-)
