Description

With the destruction of the American capital and the outbreak of the Second American Civil War, much of the world fell into economic chaos and tremendous social upheaval. In 2015, Russian military units decided to stage a coup, replacing the Russian Federation with the militant Russian Union. With the USA collapsing along with NATO, the Russian Union used this weakness to invade Europe. The collapse of the US and the Russian invasion of Europe greatly affected Africa as its main suppliers of foreign aid left many African nations in a desperate state. However, as the war turned against Europe, Africa entered an economic boom as the European nations were increasingly desperate for raw materials. When the Russians began withdrawing, the continent went back into an economic crisis until the European Civil War (2021-2034) broke out a few months later. The various opportunistic wars the Europeans fought with themselves once again fueled African development. The situation with Europe made many African nations realize just how vulnerable their economies were. Many of the smaller African nations began uniting to help stabilize their economies, promoted growth, and to defend themselves better in case of a foreign attack. The mid-2020's sped up the process when the expanding Caliphate, which had united the mainly Arab North Africa by 2024, turned its attentions to the Muslims states of the Sahel and the Sudanian Savanna. After invading and annexing the whole of Togo and Benin and largest swaths of Northern Nigeria, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast, the remaining portions of those countries joined together, along with Liberia and Sierra Leone, to form the West African Federation in 2026. The African-Caliphate War (2025-2029) devastated large portions of Southern Nigeria and the Ivory Coast but played a key role in stopping the expanding Caliphate in West Africa. Biafra seceded from West Africa in 2032 due to deteriorating ethnic relations and economic problems. While Nigeria did not want to lose the region, the country was ill faced for another war so soon and just let the new state leave. Equatorial Africa was formed around the same time and for the same reasons as the WAF. After the Caliphate annexed over half of Chad in 2025, the nations of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the southern portions of Chad joined to form the Republic of Equatorial Africa. In 2026, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo joined to form Congo to better protect themselves in case the Caliphate managed to defeat the REA. The new country was quickly absorbed in its own internal problems and in 2030, the military took control of the country. In 2033, Congo invaded and annexed Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. In 2027, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania united into the East African Union. By the late 2030's, the Neo-Japanese Empire began expanding its influence over the nations on the Indian Ocean. In 2032, Oman and Yemen (which had both managed to escape immediate annexation into the Caliphate) went to war over a border dispute. Japan supported Oman and Yemen was supported by the Caliphate. By 2033, Oman had taken complete control over the Yemeni Al Mahrah Governorate and Socotra. Japan and the Caliphate secretly negotiated that same year and decided that Oman would fall under Japanese influence and Yemen would be invaded and annexed directly into the Caliphate. After the war ended that same year Oman, fearing an invasion from the Caliphate, entered into a personal union with Japan. Japan began using Oman as a staging ground to funnel weapons and money into Somalia to gain influence. The Somali economy quickly boomed and the weapons provided by the Neo-Japanese Empire to the nation were used in by its military in the 2036 coup d'état. The military quickly eliminated its rivals and rapidly built up the nation. In 2038, Somalia invaded and annexed Djibouti. In 2041, Somalia invaded Ethiopia so it could annex the Somali inhabited regions along the border. Ethiopia, having been drained from years of war with the Caliphate (from 2028-2040 the two nations were at war with each other over Eritrea) lost and by the end of the year the Ogaden region of Ethiopia was annexed into Somalia. At the start of the next year, Somalia invaded the North Eastern Province of Kenya, igniting a long war between them and the East African Union (2042-2051). The Japanese kept funneling supplies into Somali to keep the war going and distract the EAU from its own invasion of Seychelles, Comoros, and Zanzibar in 2044. During the 2030's Japan also began using its foreign intelligence agencies to influence and put in place "friendly" regimes in Madagascar (the 2039 Night of Blood Coup), Mauritius (2039 Officers Revolution), Mozambique (2040 Maputo Mutiny), and Zimbabwe (by 2041 by simply buying the support of the local government). The speed at which the Japanese influenced these nations and their invasion of Zanzibar in 2044, scared Zambia and Malawi into joining the EAU out of fear that they would be next. South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland, after several years of negotiations, joined together to form the Federation of Southern African States in 2045, partially to combat the increasing aggressiveness of the Japanese into the region.

A painful scenario, but I can't say it's an improbable one.
