process for [link]

When designing a location the first thing I decide on is the horizon line. THis is indicated in the first picture by the sky and ground planes.
Then I spend the next few steps blocking out the silhouette of the city or the composition in this case.
Next I choose a light source and give the shapes some forms.
then I experiment with color. and then finally add as much detail as my attention span allows :D

do you paint on top of your values(normal), or do you adjust setting and add colours like that? (colour, multiply etc)

yeah i take the greyscale then go to adjustments and go to color balance. then i make the whole painting more or less one whole undertone color. then start adding color, multiply and overly layers over it.

do you adjust the neutrals, or the shadows and highlights as well? or it does not matter?
do you use colour dodge as well? and with the settings, that is the layer's settings, or the brush settings?

sorry for asking so many detail questions, but i have been doing a lot of black and white art lately and i can't seem to get the colour version to look right!

yes try adjusting all 3 for best results. i use color dodge if there is very intense light. i use a combination of layer and brush settings. use brush settings if working on an existing layer, and layer setting if creating a brand new layer.

this is great! I love your use of color. My friend and I were talking about color and were wondering, why do it in black and white first? And how do you overlay the color?

black and white establishes the value first. Id read up on that if unsure. Then there are over a dozen ways to color a black and white image. There are countless tutorials that explain that. Start by making a new layer then changing its blending to mode to color. Then start filling in! hope that helped.

ajdskflas thank you for showing your process xD i'm still completely bamboozled by your work *___*
you have one. really. amazing attention span. i'd have to take some sort of pill in order to pay attention to something so detailed and complex for that long xD (not to mention i'd have to have as much skill as you do in order to be able to do it so well in the first place)
