So, what am I working on, and how can you help? Check out the new video at:…

I'm Garrett Gilchrist. I draw, paint and animate, and I also write, direct and edit feature films, like the superheroine film "Shamelessly." I am a film restorationist who edited The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut and Star Wars Deleted Magic. I created Whosprites, the lost Doctor Who animation project. I've been a vendor at several conventions. I've written fourteen screenplays.

Yes, I do paid commission drawings! Many of the drawings here are commissions. Usually the cost is $50-100. This is negotiable depending on the difficulty of the piece.

Harvey Korman Star Wars Holiday Special Dromboid

Happy Life Day! Painting of Harvey Korman in the Star Wars Holiday Special, which aired forty years ago today (November 17, 1978). Painted digitally with the Cintiq in Photoshop to match various low quality photo reference as much as possible. Also the black tube trim on his outfit was drawn with pen & ink on paper.

He played the Amorphiian Dromboid, one of Korman's three roles in the special.…

Description from script:
A kind of Milton Cross/Bergen Evans instructor, who is guiding the youngsters of the galaxy through the mysteries of electronics. He is knowledgeable, efficient, and intelligent -- but of a race which has the physical oddity of losing power from time to time in various parts of the body. When this happens, he makes no mention of it, nor even a comment of any sort. He just gets that part working again, and continues whatever he was doing or saying.

Quote: "...and please be careful not to hurt yourself on the sharp edges--ouch."

Art for a video game, Aardvark. "Anteater" is an 80s arcade game which was ported to home computers as Ardy the Aardvark, Oil's Well and other versions.

I drew three drafts of this digitally (which I streamed live on Youtube, and might repost as a sped-up video if there's demand). I then inked the characters on paper, with fine brushwork on the Aardvark. I'm proud of using brush pen work so heavily on the character. I almost didn't do traditional inking on this, as the final Cintiq sketch was very tight and could have been used for the final product. (The underground rocks and tongue were not reinked from the digital sketch.)

Digital painting was done on the Cintiq. It's subtle in the final product but this is the first time I used a more painterly style in Photoshop with clear mixed/liquid brush strokes rather than just soft/blurred greyscale strokes. I should lean harder into that, as my painting tends to be too blurred/soft with no visible strokes.
Wolf Woman
Commission. Sketched digitally on Cintiq in Photoshop, printed blue, then inked on seven sheets of paper with .05 pigment and brush pens. Digital fixes and assembly done on Cintiq in Photoshop.
Coleco Phoenix vs. Chameleon

Promotional art for the Collectorvision Phoenix, a modern remake of the Colecovision console from the 80s, whose Kickstarter ends today.…

Partly because Colecovision wasn't super popular at the time, it's harder to find one that's in working order now, and "new" Colecovision games tend to require extra hardware anyway to expand RAM. (Plus you want HDMI output anyway these days.) So that's why the Phoenix was created, and why I was rooting for it.

Colecovision gets lumped in with Intellivision (my first console!) but Inty is limited and hard to program for (most people now use BASIC), while Coleco was built with very standard hardware for the time. Programmers like it because it's easy to port MSX, SG-1000, some arcade games and the ADAM.

I do a lot of cover art for both Intellivision and Colecovision releases, being done by retro-game programmers now and sold as cartridges, and I learned quick that Coleco is the much better system for homebrew developers, sometimes outdoing the NES versions of things.

If you look at what Team Pixelboy or Collectorvision have done for Colecovision recently, the ports are really good. The Thexder port for example is spot-on and much more accurate than the NES port.

I drew a simple and more complex version of the Phoenix (and might do a "medium" version inspired by the best of both). I was asked to show it burning a Chameleon. That was a previous system, and the Collectorvision Phoenix has nothing to do with the Chameleon (Retro VGS), which failed.

The Chameleon did use the Coleco branding (and Atari Jaguar casing) but was a whole mess.

The Phoenix is made by well-known Coleco retro developers Collectorvision, intended to replace and improve on the 80s console.

The art was sketched digitally using the Cintiq, with further work on the Phoenix done with pencil on paper, then everything was inked on about eight or ten pieces of paper and assembled. Further changes, fixes and line weight variations were done digitally using the Cintiq.

None of the images are loading at that link, but I'll take your word for it that some idiot is claiming my art as their own. Happens all the time tbh.

I messaged them about it, they didn't answer. And yeah, it does really happen usually.

When is Richard showing up at another event? I'd like to talk to him about Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure.

I am not the one to ask about things like that, but I'll announce it at the Recobbled FB page whenever there's any news. As for the Thief on Youtube, we're probably doing something with my print of Raggedy Ann this year.
