Op. 29, no. 4
Past and Future
In polished form of well-refined pen
Two sweethearts have I lavished equal praise:
Dear Past, whose glories were so sweet back then,
And Future, for her dark and smoky gaze.
What depths of passion did I find in arms
That held such proud and vivid memories,
And yet, I still cavorted with such charms,
To sleep with dreams in endless reveries.
But I could never fully grasp the hands
Of either one, for neither one would stay
For very long. They'd leave such hard demands,
And leave me tearful, in such great dismay.
Where is my Present love? It's not conclusive;
So far in all my life she's proved elusive.
