I would love this world without you in it!
-----------

Hey guys! Long time no art. I am sad to admit that the last week of January was absolutely painful and killed my art drive.
I really don't want to mention it to random strangers online because it's pretty personal (I did talk about it to some friends though) but it involved a toxic, belligerent, just awful family member who uses the "but we're family" excuse one too many times and dealing with them multiple times in a single week left me rather frustrated and just unable to deal with art for a good while.
It's one thing to have an art block, it's another where just real-life issues make you so frustrated where you like "you know, I could work on stuff I owe...but I won't because videogames would cheer me up faster".

So these two kind of represent my recent state of mind. I'm not furious, I'm just really disappointed and irritated.

It...didn't help that Photoshop crashed a couple times on these guys and I lost several hours of work. Which is odd since this picture had way less layers to work with. What.

One of my "cool-off" movies in my library is the film Quest for Camelot. It's not the best animated film out there (opinion for it ranges from "awful" to "cute but not great") and yeah it's definitely Warner Bros. was trying to get some of that sweet, sweet Disney Renaissance money, but it's a beautifully animated film with really good voice acting, amazing sound direction, and a stunning art direction. The set design and background work is just...oh man, I wish this movie had an Art of book. Shame about all those executive decisions, though. From several interviews I've read, this movie is kind of an old shame to the animators and artists who worked on it.

I also got the soundtrack for Christmas so fanart of this movie was inevitable. I really dug this guy's (guys?) design. And I never see any fanart of Devon and Cornwall, the two-headed dragon voiced by Eric Idle and Mr. Potato Head. When one of the first results to pop up in the search engine is the Nostalgic Critic thumbnail, something is dreadfully off.

I was also inspired by Dwarfdraco's phenomenal work so I wanted to see if I could do something slightly similar. Less saturation, cel shadows...It isn't as successful at capturing an official look of a production still as they are, but I felt it was decent-enough practice. It was fun scaling back my shading a bit and trying to make it look like a production cel. I probably didn't scale back the shading enough (I have a tendency to go too dark still) but eh.

But yeah. Happy February. I'm planning on kicking my butt in gear and getting more work done. Also Majora's Mask is coming out and I have drawings to celebrate.

Well, they do actually explain why Devon and Cornwall look like that with their introduction. They're the reason why cousins shouldn't marry. =B

That being said, Quest for Camelot does explain a lot of their magics if you listen, so while a lot of it is fantastical and is up for the imagination, the explain joke kinda falls flat? Like Bladebeak turning on Ruper is explained by him mistreating him, him feeling sorry for Kayley, and then him asking his fat chicken wife for approval. It's just not done in the best of ways, admittingly.

I know how they got like that, I was just referencing the Nostalgia Critic review when Doug flips out over Bladebeak suddenly switching sides and saving Kayley and as he screams for the movie to just explain the scene, he nukes the screen. It's become a thing for fans of the movie to scream JUST EXPLAAAAAAAIN! whenever the film is referenced via fanart/fanfiction or anything else related to the film.

Yeah, don't worry, I know it's from Nostalgic Critic. =) (Smile)
I often have to put disclaimers on my stuff not to quote from Nostalgic Critic because, especially with stuff like Felix the Cat: The Movie, I'm afraid of people filling up the comments with just quotes from his review.

He is pretty funny but I get that everyone quoting him can be tiresome. When he reviews movies, he's playing a character so most of the stuff you see are not his real thoughts on movies, he probably does know that QfC does explain a lot of the scenes and most likely enjoys the film in real life. There are the movies like the animated titanic movies that are so blatantly bad that you know for sure that he's not acting XD.

These two conjoined dragons siblings are the BEST ever!
It's a shame that the movie is so forgotten.

Beautiful job!

I hope that you have a great and blessed day!

Well, to be fair, this role has a tiny bit more dignity than Secret of NIMH 2. (which I also enjoy if only for his performance as Evil Martin)

Awww, thank you for the condolences! Yeah, I was going through an incredibly hard time during that point in the year (although as a whole 2015 really sucked because basically the entire year was spent looking for an apartment, putting stuff into storage, and all that fun stuff) but I felt better after watching that movie and doodling these two dorks.

And Quest for Camelot is hugely underrated. I see it on Worst Animated Films lists from time to time and I really have to wonder if the people who put it there actually saw the movie.

I didn't have too good of a year either honestly. I wonder to since I remember that movie being pretty good honestly.

There maybe a reason why "Camelot" isn't remember that much. They were other, mostly, better animated movies such "Mulan", "A Bug's Life", Dreamworks first two animated movies, "Antz" and "The Prince of Egypt" and "The Rugrats Movie".

Point of reference, you probably won't get me to draw anything if you're going to go "hey that thing you drew art of a while back was not good, here's some movies you should draw art of instead" especially when I draw fanart for things like Felix the Cat: The Movie or Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly.

It's especially rude if you do it on the deviation itself and not on the suggestion poll I put up. Yes, Quest for Camelot is not a good movie, but I myself love it and would gladly draw more fanart of it without people going on the artwork and insulting it.

I didn't meant to offend you. You're right, Camelot's far better than let say "Foodfight".
Turquoisephoenix's avatar

Yes, but even so, if someone draws fanart for Foodfight and says they like the movie (which would be weird but I don't judge), I'm not going to list a bunch of movies that are better on their artwork. It's just common courtesy. =)
