Primitive Dwarves Compilation by TurnerMohan Primitive Dwarves Compilation by TurnerMohan
These are some concepts I've been working on for 'Durin,' a Tolkien-inspired web comic series I've had in mind for some time, and am hoping to get off the ground soon. The story will cover the life of Durin the Deathless, and the gathering of the dwarves in Khazad-Dum in the early days of Middle-Earth's history. more to follow :)

Awesome! I love how all of them look, their design truly are evocative of Bronze Age humanity, quite appropriately given the stage of their culture at the time! :)Thumbs Up clap remake 1b APPLAUSE CLAP

i would imagine that the dwarves, like any of the other "speaking people" would naturally have come into the world naked and with no history of material culture (and in the case of durin himself, completely alone) essentially in an animal state, but with the inherent capacity to learn and make things quickly seperating them from the animals of yavanna. It seems reasonable to me that for their first several thousand years it would be a slow climb up.

Particularly Splendid work, Master Mohan - I've often thought that when it comes to the Khazad you have very, very few peers in the sheer quality of your depictions (no matter that Ms. Kukanova is an excellent artist, I doubt she has the gift for the gnarled visage required to make the Children of Aule sing).Nod

So far Elena hasn't deigned to try her hand at the dwarves, I think if she ever does I'm in trouble :p

Ms. Kukanova has such a special gift when it comes to the depiction of Elves that one finds it very difficult to imagine that she could illustrate their physical antithesis amongst the Free Peoples with quite the same elegant aplomb; it would be rather like Sir Ridley Scott trying to match the late, great Sergio Leone when it comes to the creation of a Spaghetti Western!:D (Big Grin)

They would, of course, be singing hi-HOOOO ... because Dwarves know a Good Thing when they hear it.:D (Big Grin)

I'm guessing you used Neanderthals for reference, but I can also see some Indo-European, Clovis American and ancient Iceni influence as well.

well you are doing an excellent job and I might add that working on early dwarves lifestyle and history can be used on many different fantasy worlds with dwarves in them!

i have created a fantasy world where dwarves are the original races with humans (men of light) and your illustrations are interesting and it would be great if i could use them in any future publication
please consider it

You are going to depict Dwarves from all Houses? By the way, I have imagined the Dwarven Road to be something like Silk Road was... from the Ered Luin all the way to Orocarni.

That dwarven road possibly was not a literal road, more like a traditional route that dwarves had used for thousands of years. Perhaps there were some ancient cities along the way, some of them human, that got their income from dwarves that traveled along that route.

I am so excited about this web comic series, you have no idea. And I'm not even that big of a dwarf fan - I go more in for the Elven side of things. You are an inspiration!

Very glad to hear it. I'll hopefully be working on it with another artist. I intend to post a little journal entry about it with some more concept art, and hopefully start a kick starter or something.

Prehistoric Dwarves look very authentic! Somehow this is not a surprise. They go well with much of the "prehistoric man" art I remember as a child in certain books. Very rough, very physical, but still with the spark of a people who are developing into something more.

Generally, id say humanity has been getting taller, more gracile and more fine featured on our long evolutionary road, so yeah the dwarves, being these wooly, stocky creatures definitely work well in caveman getup. their development from naked creatures in the wilderness to people of civilization likely occurs (as is usually the case in tolkien's tellings of the origin of a people, or in the chronological accounts of genuine ancient mythologies) in a much shorter than realistic timeframe, but i like the idea (and intend to bring it to bear in the art for this webcomic series) that the dwarves, even at the end of Durin's 3,000+ life, are still at quite a primitive state compared to how we're used to seeing them in fantasy art.

We don't know much about the Ages of Stars in Middle-Earth. But it was in those days that the Fathers of the Dwarves awoke and began their lives. Like the Elves, I can see the Dwarves advancing at a more rapid pace than Men, especially if Aule could speak to them through his element. But there must have ben a long time when the Dwarves were still rough about the edges, like the Sindar-Teleri or the Lassequendi. I suppose the Petty-Dwarves must have kept the wild & wooly aspect a little longer?

I can accept the rough appearance without much stretching, though. The working of stone generally came early in our historical development, when many other arts had not progressed very far. So it's not a stretch for me to see such rough-looking Dwarves, who yet can begin to create their subterranean homes and smelt base metals.

Are there going to be dialogues in this comic or not ? I could really well imagine a silent comic in this case and since I remember you discussing with me the idea that silent comics are really cool I wonder...
