A wood-paneled station wagon rolled down a long Midwestern highway, its backseat packed with snacks, souvenir bags, and two increasingly restless children.
Missy pressed her face to the window.
“Dad,” she asked for what had to be the hundredth time, “are we at Wild Waldo’s One-of-a-Kind Amusement Park yet?”
At the wheel, Norman’s eye twitched.
“No, Missy.”
“But you said it was close.”
“I said it was within driving distance.”
“But are we there yet?”
Norman slammed on the brakes.
The station wagon lurched to a stop on the empty road. Bud nearly dropped his comic book while Missy bounced in her seat.
Norman slowly turned around, wearing the tightest smile possible.
“Yes, Missy. We’re here.”
Missy’s eyes widened. “Really?”
“No,” Norman said flatly. “We are on a highway surrounded by cornfields, telephone poles, and a suspiciously large cow. So please, for the love of all things good and peaceful, be quiet for five consecutive minutes.”
