Chapter Six: The Talking Skeleton
Jacob wanted to turn and flee the chamber then and there, but something held him back.
Come on, he thought, as he stared open-mouthed at the skeleton. It’s chained to the wall, right? It can’t actually… hurt me.
“I’m Jacob–Jacob Morris.” The words came out with an effort. “I got here by accident, you see. Go figure.”
“Accident?” the skeleton said in that same rasping, ghostly voice. “Then you’re not one of the Cursed Children? But no… I already knew that much. Few venture into this castle, as you have, and even fewer venture here. It’s against the Rules.”
“What rules?” said Jacob. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, or who you’re talking about. Then again, I’ve been kind of confused lately in general.”
