"This place is familiar to you, isn't it?"
I couldn't help but nod. To meet the bronze beast I had traveled up a path of stone, edged by dead Christmas trees still covered in grimy ornaments. Beyond them I could see squat wooden shacks, with peeling blue paper nailed to the walls.
It had looked like my deepest dreams. The ones that feel real, even if it's a very strange sort of real.
"It's like my dreams."
"Yes. We have done our best to make it familiar to you. It is important to have comforting things. Very important."
"Why am I here?"
"There is a boy that you love."
"Of course."
"He is ill."
I said nothing.
"You would do anything to save him."
"No, poisoning orphans is pretty much out of the question."
The Bronze beast laughed like a wind chime.
"Good, you love him, but are not infatuated. Good." The beast sighed, this time like wind flowing over an open pipe.
"He can be saved. But it will be long, and painful. And maybe you cannot save the entirety of him. And perhaps at the end you will find that you hate him. But nonetheless, you can save him."
"How?"
"You have to start within his own dreams, which of late have grown rather... disturbing."
"Where do I start."
"Where you find a robin hanging from a tree branch. That will be the start of your journey."
"Why are you helping me?"
"Because someday you will help me."
I stared at the beast's face. Unsurprisingly it was unreadable. And with that I turned around to look for my robin.

Are you by any chance an interdimensional goddess come to grace us humans with your brilliance??

I say we start a new religion, the faith of Turbo. We shall praise your name while dancing around old Christmas trees, ornamented with idols of Izpapalotl.

Not to belabor the point, but again, with the angularity versus organicism.... :faint:

Also LOVE the sense of ominous, brooding tension in the "difference clouds" (?) background and the reflected near-ultraviolet highlights on the underside of the creature. Reminds me of the kind of sick, bruised twilight before a storm--and I definitely have the sense here that a storm is about to break...

Is it weird and wrong that the head (?) reminds me of a tuning fork? Subliminal implication of resonance, acoustical or otherwise, wouldn't seem out of place here. I'm also reminded a bit of the Southwestern American Indian "sun" symbol, which has always struck me as an archetype of balance and life--again, appropriate to the overarching "theme" of the text.

On the text itself, WOW. I've never been a huge Madeleine L'engle fan, but this reminded me of the very best of her stuff, at its most numinous and awe-inspiring; especially A Wind in the Door, which is by far my favorite in that whole wrinkle in Time series. Have you read any Diane Duane, BTW??

Again, hope I'm not overstepping myself here in the interpretation...I trust you'll tell me if I'm totally off-base! :)

I cannot sop associating the head with a magnet.

You really do awesome monochromatic work and I love the little bits of purple in the midst of it all. Where is the purple shine coming from though? Within the creature?

Presumably the lights are internal, nothing else would make sense :)

I love the hint of purple

also do you have some good suggestions for real textures to study? you have a very good grasp of light and I'd love to know what you like to paint from life for general study/filler/enjoyment.

I haven't done that many life studies lately, which is not a good thing. However, I did spend most of college walking around with a pocket notebook and drawing all the trees, cars, and brick buildings around. Trees are great practice for texture.

The tiny little purple details get lost in the thumbnail and the preview himage. I'm very glad I clicked for fullview. I feel terribly irreverent for this, but I would love to clong him up against a cliff-face like a metaphysical tuning fork.

Wow. How do you make something so expressionless so intimidating? Intimidating isn't the right word, but there's a sentience there that...knows something. The combination of dialogue and posture more than compensate for its lack of facial features, and just...accentuate the eerie all the more.

In case you need to be reminded/encouraged: you cram so much into such small literary packages (lucrative dream farming! Interpersonal dramatension! Tough decisions! Manipulation! Creatures knowing your silent torments!)! Sometimes it's daunting to see a bunch of words under a picture, even if it's an amazing picture, and it's so easy to skim or even skip most of the words despite the art that goes with it.

And that's never been the case with your posts, haha! The art always has me gawking and I can't seem to get to the words fast enough...and then I'm out of words D:

Well, when I made this I only had a sort of mental vision, but going backwards there's a lot of subconscious hints to a royal/wise presence. Lazily crossed arms, gold and purple colors, attempts at making the creature look weighty and stable, and a ridiculously high "crown." None of these really mean anything on their own, but if you put enough of them there the brain can piece them together but it may not know why. It's a technique I love because it's a little disorienting when done well!

Thank you so much for the comments, seriously I appreciate them :blushes:

Story of my life. I never isolate the individual details that lead to my comprehension of [parts of] the 'big picture,' but I can at least verbally fumble my way to showing I've caught glimpses of it. This definitely qualifies as the disorientingly-well-done kind of subconscious message, for sure.

...I typically lurk, but it's so easy to have something to say for your stuff. Lots of times I can appreciate someone's deviation, but it never gets past raised eyebrows and a mental "Well I like this bit..." and...I don't find 5-word comments worthwhile regardless of which end of them I happen to find myself. And so I don't leave them. And it makes me seem quiet.

But not in this neck of the woods!

One of these days you need to collect and publish your little "speedcrap" stories. There's so much possibility in such a tiny vignette, and then there's the illustration itself, which just begs the question, "Where the heck is this going to go next?"
