I realized that the 16th century masked hoods were WAY creepier than any larp-gear that steampunk-fans by online today...

They both work in different scenarios.
I agree though, the other one has more "charm", if you will, and this one just has this dirty look to it in a sense, that makes it so much creepier. I doubt I explained that well.

I've had that feeling since it's strange how they designed the mask to look like a bird.

It was unintentional. The cone shaped nose piece held herbs and musks that kept out the stench of the dead and were thought to combat foul air.
