While I was out at DeviantArt HQ for the Artist in Residency program, we visited the LA Cat Cafe Lounge to record some video for the Explore series. It was an awesome day of recording that included SO MANY CATS. I talk a little about my art and how cats often motivate my cute aesthetic. Check out the video on the DeviantArt YouTube:

February Artist-in-Residence: TsaoShinDeviantArt’s Artist-in-Residency program continued in February with Eric Proctor (aka@TsaoShin)! It doesn't get cuter or cuddlier than Eric's art, so we took him to CatCafe Lounge in Los Angeles. Watch the video below to learn about the importance of joy in the creative process and how pets can inspire an artist’s creativity.

Each month, an artist from the DeviantArt community will spend a week at DeviantArt headquarters to create a new piece of art. As they create, they’ll share useful information to help other artists in a number of ways, ranging from live Q&A sessions, to podcast episodes about their artistic process, and more. The program started in January, when RJ Palmer (aka @arvalis) visited DeviantArt headquarters for a week and created a stunning work of art based on the theme “kindred.” Through interviews, livestreams, and more, @arvalis was able to share his wisdom with those pursuing a creative field, and there’s still more content to come that we’re excited to share. Our second artist for the Artist-in-Residency program was Eric Proctor (aka @TsaoShin)! In his time as the Fan Art Community Volunteer, his passion and positive attitude have elevated the art form, while his tutorials and resources give back to fellow artists on their own creative journeys. His work, including the popular mashup of Disney scenes with Grumpy Cat, is filled with the same joy. As a longtime deviant and prolific streamer, Eric embodies the spirit of this program.Check out what else Eric did while spending the week at DeviantArt headquarters.Monday Schedule Post:Tuesday Artist Feature:Weekly Artist Feature: TsaoShindate.relative.dateEach week, we interview a different artist andTuesday/Wednesday Work-in-Progress Shot:Wednesday Live Stream:

Meet the DeviantArt Collective: TsaoShinFollow @team for weekly art tips and monthly challenges from artists you love!, Throughout the year, we'll be sharing quick interviews with artists from the DeviantArt Collective; a group of streaming artists on DeviantArt who have been creating positive and creative spaces. Today's featured artist is digital painter and professional conceptual illustrator @TsaoShin. He loves giving back to the art community so check out his tutorials and resources through DeviantArt, Twitch, and YouTube. @TsaoShin was also the Artist in Residence for February 2020. , ,,When did you start getting into art? Did you have any schooling for it? Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It was one of those things that I always found myself doing through my childhood despite whatever I had going on. Unfortunately, even though they were well intentioned, my parents did not want me to pursue art professionally. They were worried that the field would be too hard and I wouldn’t find work so they did a lot to divert my interest in art rather than nurture it. They thought going into medicine would be a solid career path for me so I ended up going to college for biology. I gave it my all but the call to art was too strong to fight. I changed my major half way through school and never looked back. It was a scary choice but I knew it would ultimately lead me to a better path to happiness. It took a lot of courage and of course it came with a lot of risk but I’m so glad I did it.Do you have a goal when creating art? Why do you feel it is important?Whenever I’m making a new piece, it’s because I have a story to tell. I want to weave a tiny narrative from my mind into something visual. It can be a huge scene with an obvious story or something subtle and small like an expression or aesthetic. Most of my work comes from a desire to express the fun I have in life so many of my themes are either jokey, cute, or playful.,What's one secret fact about you that not many people know? Nice try, CIA… Honestly though, I’m a pretty open book so if we’re talking about little known facts: I climbed and summited Mount Rainier, I play violin, and I’m a beekeeper. How would you describe your art to someone who hasn't seen it?Lisa Frank meets internet memes.,Would you live in the world you create in your art? Oh absolutely. I don’t want to get too Bob Ross here, but I get very lost in the small spaces I make in my art. I think it’s neat to imagine walking through them and hanging out with the characters I’m drawing. Not in my drafts though. That is a nightmare world that time forgot. Is there a moment you wanted to quit, or have you faced a very challenging time in art? What kept you moving?Playing violin taught me a very unexpected lesson about artwork. Violin is incredibly competitive. There were times I’d be practicing on average 5 hours a night, private lessons 3 times a week, and competition performances back to back. I’d be pitted against my friends for chair placement and music scholarships. It got to a point where I despised my violin. I hated that music wasn’t fun and I couldn’t simply enjoy playing without feeling like I was being judged constantly. I promised myself I would not let that happen to art. Regardless, I have faced some major burn out with only myself to blame. It’s so easy to get trapped into the mindset of creating artwork for numbers, likes, comments, fame, whatever brand of judgement is your flavor. Whenever I find myself slipping into that hole, I think back to violin and remind myself that I should create artwork for myself first and foremost and strip away the fear of failing to meet some external expectation.,What is a piece that means a lot to you? Why?A piece that means a lot to me is Old River. It was in this particular painting that I found a good method for my workflow that weeded out some of the hiccups I had in my process and it represents a pretty clean translation of the idea I had in my head versus the final result which can be so amazingly rare. It also reminds me of growing up in rural Washington State and finding fantasy in wild places.See more of @TsaoShin's work by visiting his DeviantArt gallery! Can't get enough of his work?
