Seax watched the sun rise through the hills, casting it’s yellow glow over the snowy, pine filled landscape, surrounded by an entourage of orange and pink. The inn’s grimy window leaving everything with a slight yellow tint. She finished getting dressed and grabbed the massive knife her hunting band named her for, and her Double barreled hex-rifle.
She walked down the stairs, the bag weighing her down and causing the rickety wooden steps to creak more than should be considered safe. The innkeeper looked up as an octagonal coin landed on his counter and Seax left silently.
When Seax first arrived in this area she was initially confused by the presence of snow this late into spring, but the people native to the area assured her that the snow only started melting by the first months of summer. She never would have taken the job if that was mentioned beforehand.
She stopped at the frozen creek. She had been told her prey would be in the cave at its source. She noticed the odd d

before I go on my weird tirade, I would like to say this loose idea could be used for other things this was just the context I though of it in

I just had a huge breakthrough in the terms of the anatomy of vampires of my fantasy universe!

They are a virus-parasite, a functional hybrid of both. The virus infects the human (in my fantasy universe this includes neanderthals), and spreads through out their bodies. Once every cell of the body is infected the virus uses the DNA of other things that particular strain has spread through in the past (aquatic creatures mostly) to make a symbiote from the infected own cells, reprogramming the needed cells to grow the proboscis that does the blood draining. The DNA thing mentioned earlier means the virus will use traits (usually it's consistent, but random variations exist) from the other animals to grow this. One of the most common vampires is the beach vampire, whose proboscis (at least the part that emerges from the mouth) is identical to a massive bloodworm, complete with weird copper fangs. Vertebrate based vampires are often weird, with a massive proboscis that's essentially a really long pair of flexible jaws with a more wiry proboscis sheathed inside.

I just came up with this explanation and needed to write it down so I'd remember it in the morning.
Might edit depending on how sensible this is when I wake up.

Dust Bunny
specevo.jcink.net/index.php?sh…
This is being uploaded just so I can link the image to the specevo forums. I was planning to keep anonymous, but that went out the window when I decided to make this in MS paint instead of pixelart.com .... oh well

When it became clear that some of the alien organisms were a danger to humans, a large quarantine was established and all humans within the area evacuated. No one stepped foot in the quarantine zone for 9 years. Then the nearly disastrous 2016 expedition into the heart.
One of the more disturbing revelations were the Dust Bunnies. They were first seen as clusters of red mounds, seemingly innocuous alien "vegetation". It was when they eventually saw the early phases that the horror of the Dust Bunnies became clear. They were rabbits that had been over taken by an extraterrestrial parasite. The term "Dust Bunny" Technically refers to symbiosis of the Desert Cottontail and the Bloody Red-Vine.
The Bloody Red-Vine is one of the most common parasites within the more alien parts of the Mojave. Actually not related to the "plants" that were released by the Ship, it belongs to one of the major phylums of the animals, the Viniozoa. Like most Viniozoa they have a parasitic polyp stage and a free living predatory adult. The adults are small (about the size of a gnat) semi-radially symmetric flyers that are in many ways similar to parasitoid wasps in their lifestyle. They have abandoned their four sided forms to become more efficient flyers with only a single pair of wings derived from bodily plates. When a pair of adults mate, the single fertilized egg is injected into the male for his final, suicidal blaze of reproductive glory as he seeks out a Cottontail host for his unborn child. Knowing full well he will suffocate, he burrows his entire body under the rabbits skin. The egg will eventually hatch to release the polyp, which functions similarly to a Sacculinid barnacle as it spreads its red tendrils throughout the rabbits body. The rabbit, while it's still mobile is being manipulated by the polyp to seek the scent of other infected individuals and come to its final resting place in a cluster of others that share its fate of being consumed by the polyp. The polyp's hyper-fine tendrils will eventually envelope the entire rabbit, and will eventually exude orange stalks. These tube shaped stalks have an organ at the base that develops into the adult body, similar to how the Medusa develops and breaks off the polyp in earthly Medusazoans. These tubes will develop, release an adult, and wilt before they are reabsorbed into the mass of the polyp. This will continue until the rabbit is entirely absorbed and the polyp dies. While as many as fifty adults may be produced by a polyp, on a small number will survive to mate, as their are preyed upon by larger relatives.

I guess this is a sneak peak because I've decided to do a write up on both the introduced life as a whole, and then more specifically the animals and a brief overview of the major groups.
This entire project was made up so I can use the name "Desert Jellies" and "Dust Bunnies" for creatures. A lot of this is being made up on the fly, let's see how it goes!

Cave Dragon
My lonely drawing for Smaugust, I don't have the energy to draw daily, and definitely not enough energy to draw dragons that look like dragons for a month, so have this shrimp-y Edestus inspired wittle guy

The transition from traditional to digital was... a journey. I scanned it, but it cut off everything right of the eye, so I moved the sketchbook, and what d'ya know it zooms in to the perfect amount to cut of the exact same part of the head. Third try was fine, but a little light. So I open the file in MS Paint and crop it. I don't have an image editing program, so I did the nonsense that is getting something into DA's own  Muro. It takes two tries, but I get it so that 90% of it doesn't get cropped out for no reason, and decide to fiddle with the setting 'till I get what you see here. I then can't find out how to change the shape of the canvas, so I just screenshot it and paste it back into paint and crop it

this guy is hexapodal and looks a little but with wings that have turned into an extra pair of legs and  like www.deviantart.com/rodrigo-veg… I don't have any lore. They're liquivores and the jaws are just for making the kill, the proboscis is the main consume-y thing. I refuse to ever draw a traditional dragon. call me a dragon hipster. Come on, do it
later versions include antennae to make them look more shrimp like, because I really like shrim, both as animal and food

I wish I could apply the level of detail I use on my monsters to Dinosaurs, but dinosaurs just aren't wrinkly. I need to learn better ways of drawing feathers and scales. I should also just draw more dinosaurs. It's been about half a year now
Deinonychus In color
Deinonychus is one of those dromæosaurs I consistently draw with vulturine features. I remember reading something that inspired this ages ago, but I cannot for the life of me remember it. This was drawn ages ago during my brief flirtation with color as seen
  • this guy has a quill pompadour, because I though it would look interesting and alter the outline without giving it a fleshy comb that sort of became a cliche in my dromæosaurs for a while.
  • Also his serrated tongue operates like a cats or a snails radula, used to scrape meat from bone that would be difficult to reach.
  • The more lumpy caruncles around the eye are defense against others of his species, either in mating battles or whilst fighting over scraps of meat.
I have no clue if 1. it's neck could bend like that or 2. it's even an accurate head shape, as I was drawing this while listening for music and didn't wan't to interrupt that every five seconds by tabbing out to look at reference
I am very annoyed by the hilariously late realization that real animals that have caruncles for eye protection tend to have them above the eye because they need to see forward. Stupid past me. I did this a lot too

Dodekageist
When 12 spirits and/or ghosts are mashed together forcibly, the being produced is the tenuously (and rather uncreatively) dubbed Dodekageist. Entities filled with rage and pain, they are made to believe that by consuming flesh they can eventually be given individuality. Of course, this only works when the massive spiritual parasites pump them full of substances that warp their perception and dulls their logic, combined with the simultaneous struggle of the 12 individuals. Though, should their would be master fail to notice the removal of the parasites, they will meet a fate most grim

let us see if the pattern of "fantasy first, palaeo last" holds up
also that horn was added last minute and was definitely inspired by Eva Unit 01

Froge Squire
A goblin squire from a noble family. Pictured here nude for simplicity's sake

51 years ago a hunting party of wizards downed a Fleshgod and thrust the corpse deep under the earth. As always happens, the scent of the god's decay attracted beings from throughout the realms and planes. The caves became twisted and warped as reality gave way in the vicinity of the astral cadaver. This corpse was different from many others though. It called to the amphibians of the realm, and many would give in to the pull and attempt a voyage to the cave. These annual attempted migrations became known as "Toad Tide". Eventually some, certainly native to the area near the cave, would successfully make it to the bloated thing and feast. The God's Flesh of a Flesh God. Over generations these newly cave dwelling creatures would rapidly warp, shifting forms. Many looking like a mockery of men, others like things never before imagined. These new beings, the toadfolk, the manderfolk and the others became known collectively as the Goblins and Elves.
The many things called to the cave also brought parasites, and these parasites eventually found themselves into the flesh the new people. The pictured individual is suffering from a number of parasites himself.
  • His left eye swollen with many strange worms
  • The additional legs caused by a parasite that attacks the goblin in developement
  • the swollen ending on two of these legs will, in many years, burst and release strange interdimensional "crabs"
The cave folk do not abhor these parasites, they in fact see them as gifts from the deceased god that gave them shape. They see it as an honor to carry the children of these strange creatures from other worlds. Some lowborn goblins and elves even gain higher status simply by having prodigious numbers of parasites squirming in their flesh.
Goblin/Elves have one massive capital city that remains mostly isolated from the other races. There are rumors of strange statuary and massive buildings carved from godbone or titanic stalagmites. Outside of their native caves, they live as nomads, either peaceful traders or vicious raiders. At least one family (of whom the pictured individual belongs) have managed to gain rank and prestige as a noble house in some of the western kingdoms.
Because of their innate ties to the Red via their origin from GodFlesh, Goblins and Elves easily pick up flesh magic and have many practitioners. The usage of such many of the other races find disturbing. The above individual has a Flesh orb, a small but dense chunk of biomass for manipulation pulled directly from the red. These allow practitioners to practice their art without incurring the discomfort or suffering of other living beings.

this is my first ever attempt at pixel art. I'm happy with it as a first try, but I am very unhappy about how the eyes came out, and I also struggled with color choices, working with color to shade is a very different experience than the hatching that I'm used to. Suffice to say, it was very fun and I hope to improve

wait, ningyo is pronounced ning-yo and not nin-gyo?!
That was surprisingly world shattering
Why did english give up on þ and ð? I mean I could understand dropping one and keeping the other, but have dedicated letters for th seems really nice. I've had the argument made that they look to similar to existing letters (the first time I saw þ I thought it was an accented b) but ð stands out quite a bit from d, especially now that we don't curve the top of the d. I mean people can tell the difference between T and I, why not Ð and D? þere's no good reason, and you can fight me
Wait, they look a lot like Colpcoryphe. It may have been mislabeled, I'm not sure, some Flexicalymene species look pretty similar
And the flex bois have arrived! the most flex-y, caly, and mene bois in town. watch out for their three lobed antics.

Bologna is an awful word. Of all the things english speakers butcher and anglicize, why not bologna?! What language is that? You've lost my linguistic respect, mystery language
turns out it's Italian
Vilhelm
There was once a pack of highwaymen outside a certain town, known as the Wolves of the Red Star. They held a monopoly over the main road that led to the town, and they did not hesitate to use their halberds on the town watch who came after them. The continued humiliation and the deaths of his men drove the captain to the guard to desperate measures. He struck a deal with the fæ. Him and a mercenary spread false news of noble coming to the town, and attacked the Wolves.  The wolves fought, and killed the pair after a grueling battle. But their corpses rose, puppeteered by pixies, their organs coming alive and their blades fusing with their flesh. The Wolves didn't stand a chance. Only one survived. Vilhelm. His town had been eaten by the wild forest fæ. He forged a crude iron blade, and broke it as he ran the three hearts of their queen through. He carried that blade with him always, and finally used it to avenge his fallen comrades.
Vilhelm made a pact of his own, the God of the Red Star. A god of the FLESH and WAR. He would do the bidding of the god, but in return his presence became poisonous to the fæ, his blood like acid and his breath a suffocating smoke. This cost though, was greater than the poor bandit had predicted. Whenever the Red Star would appear in the sky, he lost control of himself and took vermiformous shape. His body and neck stretched and his limbs shrank to vestigiality. He would hunt the enemies of the god, drilling his blunt teeth through their flesh and tunneling through them. When his work was done he would curl up inside of one their corpses.
A life of blood and servitude, Vilhelm fled to wild before he killed more innocents. Living in a forest on the Western Continent, he hunts and practices necromancy in isolation. Though he ties him self down when he sleeps, he still occasionally awakens in a pile of gore.

I've had this character bouncing around my brain for a while. With my latest attempts at a fantasy setting going better than most, I finally found a home for him. He is originally from a bad story I wrote a while ago, but it formed my current conception of Fæ, and gave me an origin for the even looser "hunter necromancer" character I'd been thinking about for even longer

Velociraptor
O, þe speedy brigand of old

Finally uploading some art, have a velociraptor. From my brief flirtation with coloration. Inspired in artistic technique by NashD1 , and also his push for vulturine dromæosaurs. I figured it made sense because not only is Velociraptor confirmed to have occasionally scavenged (unless you thing it took out that Azhdarchid itself) meaning it probably got bit by his fellows commonly as they fought for bits, calling for a tough system of caruncles for defense. Also it could help in the hot climate, if the rest of his body was covered in simplified ratite esque feathers as shown here.

edit: well that came out blurry as all hell. I don't know how to fix that, so sorry

This quick running predator named Dromaeocursor enghi seems to have been quadrupedal based upon it's unique limb bones and bodily structure. 2018's Yi qi?. Also unique in that it is a weird look into how weird late Cretaceous Australia already was. The authors of the paper describing it hypothesize that it evolved the ability to pronate it's wrists when it's ancestors were arboreal, the wrist movement aiding the strange monkey-like paravians in moving through the trees rapidly. It was 3 meters (approx. 9 feet) long, and had a short bulky Deinonychus-esque skull, showing it to be a predator that contended with tough prey, and it's front limbs retained sharp claws, with one finger being held off the ground akin to the killing claws of dromaeosaurs, giving it multiple options of engagement against it's prey. Maybe it hunted Australia's late surviving dicynodonts?
