Patches being a smart ass...
In German language it's much more funny (in my opinion) because there's quite a difference between "dasselbe" und "das gleiche" and you have to be careful not to mess it up. Kiki apparently does and uses "dasselbe", which means her pan IS also Patches pan. German can be mean. I have no idea if it's still funny in English- I hope so. Sharing is not their strong point.

Apparently I have the same odd situation at home. We have three litter boxes for two cats and both always want to use only one and the same  (ignoring the other two wholeheartly) which causes constantly drama.

I think you're right. The comic is probably funnier in German. I think the joke got lost in translation. I still found it cute though.

Hahaha, how well do I know problems like these xD Patches is brilliant, because there's really not much you can when you hear something like that. You know Patches is right but at the same time you feel Kiki's pain, since she really doesn't want to agree with this simple logic. But at the same time fighting about it further is pointless, 'cause it's just how it is... It reminds me a little bit of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory and his "you're in my spot" comments ^^ All in all - a really funny comic page. Plus the first two frames are simply awesome. I always liked such messy doodles like the ones on the wall behind the armchair, they always seem to have life of their own.

As for your own litter boxes drama. Have you ever tried removing the one both of your cats use to see how they would react? Or would something like that just cause more problems?

Have you ever seen two cats looking at a magically invisible box? Hantje was even more confused when it was not there. I think the only problem she had was that it was not clean when she wanted to use it.
You can basically clock them by their routines. The only thing I "had to work on" was changing Hantje's routine for her "poo time". It meant cleaning the box, chasing Han, setting Han into the box, waiting (even if she didn't want to do anything in the box), cleaning up, praising Han.
That transferred into "Girl's time in the bathroom when the thumbs get home" (it's me sitting on the toilet seat and Hantje rolling around mewing...), Han running to the box (girl's time is used by hubby cleaning box), droppin the stink bomb and getting praised. I know it's manipulative but she does it now on her own and accidents only happen when we're away all day and night and Tretel decided to use "her" box as well. For being a little psycho cat she does well. She's really sensitive but I don't mind her being complicated as long as I find a way to work with her. That potty problem was actually easier solved than Tretel learning "give paw". XD

My youngest cat Luna will always use my tubby grey cat's litter tray, and I have no idea why. Maybe Teddy's tray must smell better or something, which is odd considering his pee stinks

Ah, this happens all the time with my two. The older cat always uses the same box and won't even step in the other one, but the younger cat does not discriminate when choosing where she will potty!

:XD: I can only imagine the older one's sour face when it's time to make a trip to the box and it's not clean.

She has us well trained. :D She simply finds the nearest human and gives the most pitiful mew she has. Most of the time this results in the human dropping what they are doing to clean out the box - and avoid her choosing to relieve herself next to the box instead of in it!

Yeah, I know what you mean. We have to seperate our cats when feeding them. They have both "their" place. Feeding together doesn't work- the other dish might have something "totally different because it's not in my bowl".

We give them food in both bowl. If they are hungry, they will eat both :D or the stray cat will. I'm never sure, who eat the catfood^^;

Maybe even hedgehogs. ^^; If you have these in your area. We had really fat and well fed ones because they always came by dawn and ate everything (dog or cat food... didn't matter). Sometimes our dog carried his bowl awkwardly around and 3 hedgehogs trotted in a row after him. It was hilarious.

They can be really fun, not so long ago a little hedge tried to eat my slippers with my legs in

Ah, you got that in Dutch too. It's like saying all people are the equal, but people are not the same.
We use 'hetzelfde' and 'gelijk', the meaning is quite different, but it's easy to mix it up :D

Well, I translated it differently but in Dutch it's not even 'alike', it's a more nuanced. Like saying equal in value, but not equal in being, you know?
It's always hard to get a 'right' translation even when languages have a shared origin :D

Maybe if you search hard enough. Dutch and German are relatively close, English is a bit further of, but still has a common precursor. Maybe if you look into 'older' words? I guess it'd be a lot harder if you'd go to non-related languages.

ye they are both germanic langauges, but english has a ton of french words in it. Its possible the old english had words that could be used in same way XD but I honestly don't remember much from my old english lessons beyond the word "wyrd"

Yeah, Dutch too, probably the Romans fault for taking over and stuff. I mean 'old' more like that they didn't change all that much. Those are more likely common words though like apple (appel - Apfel) and book (boek - Buch ) or kid (kind - Kind).

I don't know old English or old Dutch either, I think the oldest thing we read in English was the Canterbury tales (was I happy we had a translation for some stuff) and for Dutch some extracts of some old texts.

We learned about 'Hebban olla vogala' though which was long believed to be the oldest Old Dutch sentence ever written,
but now there's great discussion whether it's Old Dutch or in fact Old English and some say it may even be hybrid.

It's interesting to know and it makes me wonder how languages will evolve in the future and if the strict rules nowadays will change the rate at which they evolve.

XD Counterburry tales aren't in Old English. Old English doesn't sound like Modern one in the slightest as far as verbs and structure are concerned, but some words are still around.
www.omniglot.com/images/langsa…
I actually remember reading that, since we had Beowulf during our Old English classes at uni.

Words like apple/apfel etc have a common root, so they will sound the same, though similarities can sometimes lead to false friends (like pathetic in english means miserable, but "patetyczny" in polish refers to pathos, so its a lofty speech style)

:D interesting tidbit: old english word 'apple' used to mean "all fruit', but when the word 'fruit' entered the langauge (fruit being of french roots) the word 'apple' shifted meaning to just mean one particular fruit.

as for language evolution, languages are very widespread and very actively used so as such they change constantly. There is a theory, though, that we are all born with a innate structure knowledge - a LAD (language acquisition device in our brain) and we simply 'attach' words of concrete languages to an already existing 'tree' which lets us form sentences. So despite all the evolution of language we are still using the same sentence structure across all languages (albeit in some languages it's mirrored). ^3^ Its somewhat comforting to know some things wont change there.
Holy sammersoulting onegais I just went into lecture mode XDDDD
