Lackadaisy Distemper by tracyjb Lackadaisy Distemper by tracyjb
Latest comic update and end to this most recent scene/chapter.  Volume 2 is nearing completion on the whole as well.

In Haitian Voodoo (and New Orleans Voodoo by extension), it's believed that a spirit may be invoked as a garde (or gad) for an individual through ritual sometimes involving branding or scarification. The spirit is 'fed' by rubbing its favored liquors and herbs into the wound.  Of course, it's generally a much more voluntary rite than Serafine seems to have made it out to be.

Also, Lackadaisy is now on Patreon!

Lackadaisy can be read at the web site, and other related content can be found on tumblr and facebook.

I didn't know it was possible, but even a master like you seems to get better over time. Look at that street scene -- the mortar and bricks, streetcars and traffic... all spot on.
Meanwhile, the story is taking some beautiful, deep turns.

This is a real high quality comic. I can tell from the dialogue and artwork.
But did I pay attention?
I saw a chicken, and THAT'S what finally made me click on it....the chicken....

I've had to look at that Veve many a time for one of my stories.

Must've been a bit rough to carve into his skin XD;  Very nice!

I always try imagining Liam O Brien reading Mordecai's dialogue. :P

Brilliant attention to detail. I like the little touches like how you have Serafine opening the cigarete box and Mordecai retying his tie after stopping the bleeding. That really adds life to the conversation they're having. :D

I really adore how in that large shot with the two in the foreground and Mordecai at the back, that even the lights of the other cars look like watching eyes!

Amazing as always.

I'm slightly confused, did they forcibly give him drugs? Or did they cut into him without permission?

Yeah, it's a form of branding.

Awesome page! Your style is really taking off. I mean, evolving quickly in a good direction. Bolder, more self-assured. And the less monologue per text balloon is a welcome bonus, too. Great work, curious where this story will go next.

Just a few questions:
Did Nicodeme just reference 'Animal farm'?
And since when is the Michael Moorcock chaos star associated with (fake) voodoo? (Especially when Moorcock was not even born in the 20's)
tracyjb Featured By Owner Sep 27, 2015
It's the veve for Maitre Carrefour/Kalfu inside a circle.  For all the talk of paths and directions in the dialogue, it's intended to resemble a compass.  If you see a chaos star, well, okay, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that Michael Moorcock was not the first person to invent a symbol involving radial lines.
Dutch-CannonFodder Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
No, symbols that are (based on) radial lines are almost as old as recorded history, but this is not what I mean. You see the radial lines rarely, if ever, meant chaos until Moorcock used them as a base for a symbol for the concept of chaos. To do this he turned the lines into arrows (not the compass variety of arrows which are better described as points) and also made variants which included spheres, and later Games Workshop made cartwheel variants as 'original do not steal' material for Warhammer.

Anyway what I was getting at was that since your symbol uses arrows I thought it was a chaos star. If it is just smudges and you used lines, my mistake.
And thanks for explaining the meaning you were going for, you do not want to know how popular radial lines are in pretty much anything that uses symbology.

First of all, this slight dip into even the possibility of the supernatural has me all atwitter with excitement, for THANK YOU for that!

Second, any and all interactions between the Savoys and Mordecai I can't help finding delightfully sexy and intriguing. This latest installment being no exception to that. :)

I'd love to be able to get hard covers of vol. 1 and 2 when they're available. Every time I've checked it seems like they're forever out of stock. Forget my idiocy! Vol. 1 is available now excuse me I must go throw money at it kthxbye!

Hehe...once he realized that the scarification was inevitable, he probably told them how to make it so.
Nakurux Featured By Owner Sep 8, 2015
Did they carve the symbol of Maitre Carrefour (sp) into his chest? I remember seeing that symbol on the floor when Serafine was referring to him as the loa they worshiped. I love the shot of the skeletal gator though...hard to tell if its gonna protect Mordecai or swallow him whole. Speaking of, I can see that glare he's giving Serafine...that man is not pleased. I imagine it wasn't exactly voluntary to get that symbol etched onto him. Really curious to where things are going to go for Mordecai now, especially with the Savoys interested in him.

...and also incoherent gushing because I love the everything that you do with your art sadafjlkhwauiyhgfvgisgadfjksdnbkjwfbsafbxfjsa okay I'm done. The expressions are spot on as always, the colors are wonderful, and that panel with the symbol on the napkin has so much weight to it without really being much more than just what you see there. Amazing work as always, Tracy.

Also, what is a garde, exactly? I tried a brief search to see in more detail what they are, but no luck. Are they guardian spirits? Guides, protectors?
ShadowHellHoundz Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2015  Student General Artist
I think they're a French representation of "Protectors", who are spirits that; through ritualistic or birth rights, protect the person or thing they are bound to by one -or both-- of those methods. In most cases, they're generally friendly but you have to respect them and treat them like equals, or bad things will occur.

For example, things like bad luck, things going wrong in your life or even (in rare cases) death.

Love your comic but I will never get used to the "French words with German accent" thing...
Will-of-the-spurr Featured By Owner Sep 8, 2015
What what? aren't they supposed to be Louisianan?
LeLazard Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2015
That would explain the French words, but I'm still puzzled by the accent. A French accent would unfortunately be more like : "Ziss iz ze way!"
I'm not familiar with Lousianan speech, though. Maybe something that sounds German to me isn't German at all?
Will-of-the-spurr Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2015
Perhaps. You have to remember that it's mixed with the local Haitian Creole accent and a Southern American element as well. If it were German, I think they would speak much more abruptly. Anyway, Germany never established colonies in America because it wasn't formed at the time.

Damn. It's so interesting to think that, for all the deep mythos, character development, and rich history this series has shown us, all that's happened so far in the actual main plot, some nine years in the writing, is Rocky burnt down a pig farm, they fought back and got killed by Freckle, then Rocky got run over by some undertakers while Mizzi stole a blank check from Wick and Mordecai went to some Voodoo party. All of this has happened over the course of about a week, at most. I'm not complaining, though. It certainly doesn't feel like that's all that's happened. It's simply strange to think that that's the case.
maybelletea Featured By Owner Sep 10, 2015
okay I kind of follow lackadaisy, have been for yeaaars but I agree- there's a lot going on in terms of character/history but as far as actual plot what even has happened  LOL I need to go back and reread. I like your summary here.
